The Ship Model Forum

Hello everyone,

I am new to this forum but not the hobby. I have been building plastic models on and off since 1972. One of my projects (1/72 scale Revell E-boat) was published in Scale Modeler last year after it won 2nd placing in one of the Regional IPMS meets.

I am posting this project showing the IJN Haruna (1/700, Fujimi) with an escort sub-chaser W20 leaving Brunei Bay for Singapore after the Battle of Leyte Gulf. I detailed both vessels with Tom Modelworks photo-etch parts. The Fujimi Haruna needed a lot of re-work since it is an older kit. I had to reconstruct parts of the bridge, added spars for the main and secondary masts and re-constructed the funnels where I had to slice off the molded tower supports.I also re-surfaced the float plan deck to look like the linoleum boards (the kit came with the same wooden plank texture as the rest of the main deck). It is not perfect but it resembles the historic Haruna a lot more than the orignmal kit configuration.

The little sub-chaser came from the Tamiya "IJN Auxiliary Vessels". I changed the turrets to the more accurate open backed configuration from Pitroads and phto-etch parts scrounged from various IJN kits. I wanted to show the scale of the Haruna as compared ot this little vessel.

Hello everyone,

Thanks for your feedback. This forum is great. Now I feel like when I build these little ship models in my workshop, I have a world-wide audience to cater to.

Next project finishing soon is USS Iowa (1044 config.) with a Fletcher class destroyer bombarding Japanese coastal defences at Leyte Gulf. I will post the pictures as soon as they are available.
