My 1st model build was Revell's 1:72 Gato sub in 2012. I enjoyed it so much that I went out and purchased Trumpeter's SS John W. Brown and tried my hand using Gold Medal PE parts with this kit. Wow-without a proper bender, I did my share of destroying some parts! I also realized that 1:350 scale is too small a scale for my eyes. After finishing the model, one of my cats knocked off the prop and rudder. Found the prop but had to fabricate the rudder by using styrene plastic sheet and rod; then drilled pins into hull to hold both. Paint was done with Testors spray paint and enamel bottles. Weathering was done by using some watercolor washes; rust was done with oil pastels and Testors CreateFX rust wash; graphite powder used on decks and hull, and slight Green Grunge powder brushed on bottom of hull. I'm currently working on Revell's 1:96 USS Constitution and hope I have as much luck in that project.
