Finally some more work on the Kinugasa - aft bridge

BIG thanks to Mucho (Mutsuo Sasaki) for helping me to pin it down!

I´m afraid something´s seriously wrong with me :(
The Hasegawa kit has 2* parts for the aft bridge, mine totals 40+ :o

Well, yes. But that's an entirely different discussion. :heh:

Your PE is seriously impressive.

Thanks, Dan! Maybe impressive, but discovered today that they do not really match the silhouette of the ship (my parts being a bit too high), so it will need another attempt. But I´ll get there (and continue learning on the way) ;)

Hello everyone, sorry for being quiet for so long. I was busy at work and also somewhat lost my mojo over the summer, but I´ve been back at the workbench in the last two weeks.

I am posting some quick photos of the status quo. These include final versions of the aft superstructure and the aircraft handling deck. Please note all the subassemblies are dry fit to the deck only and similarly upper levels of the main bridge, so the alignment may not be proper. Not shown is the 120mm dual purpose secondary armament and some other smaller parts that I´ve got ready, too.

My aim now is to prepare everything for spraying the linoleum deck and then Kure grey. Most importantly I need to add all the piping to both funnels and construct both masts, but there are indeed other details to work at.

Sorry for the non-ideal quality of the photos - they look a bit better if you click them and view them on Flickr.

Thanks to you both!

As I am now getting ready to do the piping on funnels that distinguished Kinugasa from Aoba, I noticed the following other differentiator that I overlooked previously (marked yellow):
Attachment:
Drawing Kinugasa (left) vs Aoba (rt), Maru Special #38.jpg
Drawing Kinugasa (left) vs Aoba (rt), Maru Special #38.jpg [ 71.64 KiB | Viewed 1671 times ]

I checked my photo collection and found only one photo of Kinugasa dated 1936 that shows something in this place:
Attachment:
19360600 IJN Kinugasa at Kure 2nd half of 1936 before reconstruction from port aft.jpg
19360600 IJN Kinugasa at Kure 2nd half of 1936 before reconstruction from port aft.jpg [ 38.3 KiB | Viewed 1671 times ]
It looks to me like some kind of a side chute. None of the earlier photos I´ve got show anything there and the only other later photo I´ve got showing her port side in 1941 (available here) is not really clear enough but I´d say there is nothing between the two HA gun sponsons there.

I tried searching the net once again and found a similar photo of Kinugasa before her pre-war reconstruction (available in full resolution at this link):
Attachment:
19360600 IJN Kinugasa at Kure 2nd half of 1936 before reconstruction from port aft from naviearmatori.net.jpg

Here that feature looks to me like a detachable chute, not attached permanently to the hull side. I consulted this with Dan K and finally decided to omit this in my build at all for lack of better resources. If detachable, it would presumably not be there in wartime conditions (as I intend to depict Kinugasa at sea in the middle of the Savo Island battle) anyway. I still don´t know what that item shown in the Maru special sketch was but I´ve probably got no way to find out exactly.

Your ideas welcome!

Quick update on where I am now (in the correct thread this time!)
Some minor steps still due before a coat of Kure Grey.

Vladi, excellent and very precise work. And also a very good selection of ships and accessories for construction. I have to agree with your rating of Shelf Oddity products.
So, a keen eye and a firm hand. I look forward to another beautiful IJN model in the Gallery.

Thank you, Martin, Christian and Milan, I really apreciate your feedback!

While trying to find out how the piping on Kinugasa´s funnel might have looked like in 1942 (discussed here) I switched to my Chicago build in the meantime. I tried also some facebook groups but nothing turned out so far. Anyway, I´ll be back here hopefully soon ;)

Sprayed Kure grey today. Looks good, just a mishap while peeling away masking tape from the deck - part of the linoileum colour peeled with it. It was a mistake to scrub the colour from linoleum attachment stripes before applying the masking tape - learning while erring ;)

My take on the searchlight towers is that these were rectangular in cross-section on Kinugasa - as opposed to the Furutaka class, where these were triangular. My assumption is based on the photo below, I think triangular would appear different on such a close-up photo.

Still some work left on the funnels - handlines to be added to the black-painted bands and most of the piping, too.

Main armament from blacman´s Extreme Upgrade Set is simply astounding! I only added mounting frames for the aiming-training equipment. Will not add the equipment as such as I am depicting her in combat situation, so the equipment will be stoved inside the ship.

Thank you, Dan :)

Slowly preparing all the millions of super tiny parts of the Extreme set. Very slow progress, but hope to see the end not too far away!
