Greetings I am new here and this is my first post. I just completed my build of USS Mertz DD-691 in 1/125th scale. I have modeled Mertz in her end of war/late 1945 appearance with the DESRON 54 Red Devil insignia on the forward stack and squadron number on the midship 40 mm support. I could only find one photo of Mertz in Measure 22 and decided to use this along with the DESRON 54 insignia. This project started out a long time ago with a Lindberg Blue Devil kit and gradually evolved into a highly modified kit that incorporated Toms Modelworks photo etch, Dreadnought resin turret set, HR Products weapons & fittings, and a glass fibre hull from Hong Kong. In addition, lots of other materials were used to modify kit parts and scratch build other items. Lots of kit parts were used which can be seen if you look closely. Paints include Floquil marine colours, Testors enamels, Floquil railroad spray and Rustoleum spray paints. I used a Badger 200 and Paasch airbrush. I made my own decals for the deck anti-skid strips, the hatch material condition plaques, and the squadron insignia for Destroyer Squadron 54. The stand is a stained piece of high quality pine fitted with brass lamp finials. I made my own custom plexiglass cover to protect the model from dust. Please let me know if you have any questions, comments, or suggestions. Regards, Bill Attachment: Attachment: Attachment:

Welcome aboard! She looks great - any chance of some shots of the bridge and the whole length? Edit: ah, I guess you are slowly working toward that ^^ |

That's all for now. The better and more detailed photos are too large to upload so I will have to shrink them first. Most of these cover the bridge structure, whaleboats, and other closeup shots. Regards, Bill |

Beautiful ship. She doesn't look anything like the Lindberg kit. |

Thank you for this my Father passed away on October 2nd of 1996 He was a fireman first class on the Mertz, he ended up getting lung cancer of course fireman were exposed to a lot of asbestos and they didn't know about it back then, But a wonderful job on this beautiful boat Dad would be proud. he told me the Mertz was in a typhoon and was within 1 degree of the top stacks taking on sea water the boat was nearly on it's side. Also for those who don't know the fighting fletchers earned the #5 spot on the top ten fighting ships ever built!. I had no idea these ships were in harms way as much as they were my dad was a pretty modest sort and didn't brag I also know that out of around 200 built 25 or so were sank so about 1 in 8.. Thanks again |

Hello Billy Ray, Thank you for your kind words. I can't think of a higher compliment then to know that a WWII crew member of DD691 would have appreciated my efforts to model USS Mertz. My Dad served on the Fletcher Class DD689 USS Wadleigh in WWII. Like your Father, my Dad was also very reluctant to mention anything about his combat experiences, but loved to talk for hours about life in the Navy and about day to day life at sea. Some of the stories he told still make me laugh. Many Thanks, Bill |
