I just completed the first vessel for my Mare Island 1/350 diorama. That is a tiny YG lighter, which would be docking alongside the USS San Francisco (which is in progress) later. I used the very nice battlefleet models resin kit as a base, and added a large number of detail. Most of the detail had to be artistic license, as I found no photos for a Mare Island assigned YG (there would definitely be one, but no idea which... Only Pearl Harbor ones are covered to some extent). First, I scratch built the davits and their rigging using steel wire, plastic bits, human hair and transparent sewing thread. Main deck railing was from the Battlefleet kit, but I had to provide my own for the superstructure, I utilised the spare ones from Eduard Yamato set. I added LionRoar's inclined, and Tom's vertical ladders, and self made fenders. I also substituted L'Arsenal PE hand wheels for the Battlefleet's resin ones. Painting and weathering has been done using Modelmaster enamel and Tamiya Acrylic colors, as well as MIG pigments. Rigging is done using WEM Lycra thread, Human hair (my mother's and my girlfriend's) and "invisible" sewing thread. Building time was around 4 weeks, but with large breaks.

I did not add the crew yet, but plan to add it later "in action" for diorama.

Yard garbage lighter is a swimming trashbin ;) It is a special small motor lighter/barge for removal of trash and rubbish from the larger ships. It comes alongside a large ship in port, the large ship unloads its garbage into the holds using the deck hatches, then the lighter goes out to the sea, opens the side hatches and dumps the garbage into the sea. Not ecologic, but cheap. At pearl harbor such lighters were used also to pick up survivors from the water, and also to fight fires.
