Looking great Phil! :thumbs_up_1:
On a separate note, has anyone out there bought this kit and the Yankee Modelworks version? I am curious as both are similar in price, which one they felt was better in terms of overall accuracy and detail?

After removing the Flight-deck ,I added the PE deckrailings on the lower platforms.I started to use the Hasegawa PE,but I found this very difficult to use ,as it was ultra fragile, and went out of shape very easily. So ,I resorted to using some WEM PE railing, which was much better. While the F/D was seperated, I added the 40mm and 20mm guntubs to the sides, when completely dry ,I placed the F/D back on the hull.Next up is to start detailing this area.

Cheers Phil

The port side catwalks have been detailed ,and the stacks ,and whaler have been added.I used the Hasegawa PE for the safety netting ,on to which the liferafts are attached.I don`t know what you`re supposed to attach the liferafts with ,if you haven`t got the relevent PE set, there`s just nothing there ! For the deckrailing I used Good Ole WEM PE.There are three sky-lookout posts at each corner of the flight-deck,you have to use the Hase PE again for these ,as no alternative is included in the main kit.The bases for these are very fiddly to bend to correct shape, and I found it was beyond my eyesight to do them.So ,I made the bases out of plastic rod of the correct diameter, then added the horn shaped PE upper parts.Seems to worked pretty well. I usually leave any guns until the model is almost complete,so the 20 & 40`s will be added later.

See you later Phil

This is a shot of the starboard side gun tubs ,where the island will be.I`m quite pleased that I`ve been able to use the inclined ladders included in the Hasegawa PE,they seemed to be a lot stronger than their deckrailings.

I`ve decided to make a start on the island, what there is of it.The Guadalcanal had an enclosed bridge ,whereas the G` Bay had an open one.Luckily Hasegawa has included PE for both type of bridges. I`m adding the various platforms to the lattice mast, but I won`t do them all until the model is nearly finished,as they may get damaged.

Which IPMS chapter did you check out for the paint chart you used?

I might like to give it a look.

The construction of the island is proceeding,I`ve used a combination of PE and plastic parts from the kit,as some of the PE bits are a bit beyond me!! I`ve removed the fore and aft S/light platforms to the correct location on the mast ,as I attached these too high orginally.

Yup,Bob ,its amazing what can get done ,when you have a couple of days off work!! You can see I haven`t been wasting my time.

The island is almost finished ,I don`t like the large radar (SK?) aerial from Hasegawa`s PE very much,I may consider replacing it with something from WEM.I`ve started detailing the F/D ,just used black stretched-sprue for the arrester wires and crash-barriers,it was a whole lot easier that way ,rather than using the PE option

See you,Phil

I looked at the model ,and said to myself, "good grief this is nearly finished" ,I didn`t realise how far on I had got .I`ve added the 20mm and 40mm`s to the F/D sides .I didn`t use the the PE for the 20mms,as I`m not a PE "Maestro", nor did I use the Hsaegawa PE for the 40`s,instead I used some from L`Arsenal, which was much easier for this ham-fisted old fool to use.All (ALL!)that remains is the aircraft ,and many little details to be added to the ship ,and of course the crew members ,along with the rigging ,what there is .

Cheerio for now ,Phil

I was not impressed with the TBF`s included in the kit, luckily I had a pack of Trumpeter TBF`s ,which I bought many years ago .When built these looked much better than the Hasegawa offerings. For the FM-2`s I did use the kit ones ,and ,again I wasn`t impressed ,but I used them anyway. Before I could take a photo if them my camera`s battery was exhausted,so I will add a pic of them latter.
On the last lap now!

Looking just fantastic! The speed at which you build is mind boggling, I wish I could build at 1/10th the speed you do.

Curious about what makes the Hasegawa planes inferior - can you elaborate more?

Looking forward to that, Phil - do I assume correctly that it's mainly due to proportions/scaling, rather than details and construction?
