Great idea. It seems to me, an old salt admitadly set in my ways, that based on fuel efficeincy and combat effectiveness any new surface warships should be nuclear powered. They also ought to be an improvement over what we already have. Also, I am no fan of reduced RCS. It is very expensive, and I doubt its long term effectiveness. Weapon systems evolve faster than warships do. Besides, if the stealth ship is escorting a most unstealthy carrier then what is the point. When I served on cruisers we new our life expectancy under attack was about 15 minutes or so, but we had to protect the carrier for that 15 minutes. I degress. Anyway the same propulsion plant and basic hull layout could work for the CG-47 replacement and the NGFS ship. I know many of you drool over armor, and I have no issue with making vessels small arms / shrapnel proof, but missiles pack way too much explosive potential to armor against. If we built an up armored ship our opponants would just build bigger missiles. Better to shoot them down before they hit and plan survivability into multiple zones. That way no one hit could completely disable the ship. The Spruance Cans have already been replaced by the Arleigh Burkes, as I see it. When the Burkes get replaced it ought to be with a simular sized nuclear vessel with additional weapons and capabilities. Anyway this gives you all something to chew on.
