hello,

can someone confirm my subjective impression ?

I possess 1998 snyder & short USN WW2 paint chips and i am a bit confused by 5H haze grey.
I know it's a purple blue system and so on..., and not at all neutral greys, but this haze grey chip (and also my matching homemade mix of light ghost grey and azure blue) seems strangely (?) really purple oriented.

can someone confirm that late 1941 5H truly gives this purple feeling ? and especially with a 1944 MS22 scheme ?

thank you (will try to post pictures later)

in fact my question could be this one :

ARE S&S paint chips ultra accurate ?

if yes, then i will keep my mix, because i am pretty happy with it when compared to chip.

There is a difference of what any color looks like on a full-size subject in real world lighting conditions when compared to small areas (samples and models) indoors. 5-H Haze Gray was a mix of paint with a "purple tint", but in some lighting conditions and camera settings it will appear as different shades/hues. Also, depending on how fresh the paint is and how much fading has occurred after being exposed to the sun and salt air, the color will vary.

Here are two views of the same ship, USS ALABAMA (BB-60), while painted in Ms 12R(mod) using Ocean Gray (5-O) and Have Gray (5-H) on her superstructure. To me it looks like the Navy Blue (5-N) may have also been applied to areas on the superstructure. In any case, the lightest shade seen here should be Haze Gray. Even though both of these photos were taken by the same camera and photographer shortly after the other, notice the difference. The reason can be any of several causes, the photographer changed camera settings or the lighting conditions due to the ship maneuvering changed slightly. Which image represents to "true" color of the image, I have no real way of telling.

Here is an example of an unknown FLETCHER class destroyer escorting USS ALABAMA and likely taken by the same camera and photographer (maybe even the same batch of film). The destroyer is painted in Ms 22 with her superstructure being painted in 5-H and deck is painted in Deck Blue. Note the difference in appearance of the 5-H based on whether that part of the ship is in the sun or shade. Also, note that USS ALABAMA has the sun behind her and she appears as a Silhouette at this range. Nothing of her camo pattern is apparent.

I can tell you that the S&S paint chips in question are accurately matched to the USN's reference: the 1929 Munsell Book of Color; Randy and I each own original copies.
