Hello tegun:

You look like you are off to a good start. I am doing one as well, but; as I am not doing any major work I won't be doing a log. Like you, I am following Mr. Sharps build and making ammendments and corrections where needed. I am looking forward to following your build and see how you progress.

Not much done on the ship itself, working on the main turrets.
Dust was becoming an issue so i made the case earlier than planned.
The base is a sandwich of 2 laminated 3/4'' thick pine planks, the cover is
made of 1/8'' plexi.

Hello Alain:

Lot's of progress there, looks good. From the photo it's hard to see if that is a wood deck or a painted deck. It looks good from the photo's. I am quite a ways from that stage yet, but not sure I want to go with wood. I don't like the seams though and don't want putty, sand, putty, sand etc., so will probably go with the wood deck. Nice to see progress.

Hello Mark,

I hear you! I didn't want to putty and sand ''Ad Nauseam'' either.
Besides, at that scale, those wood deck looks quite convincing to me.
This one is from the Mk1 set. Looking forward to see from your built.

Regards,

Alain

All right all! I guess it's time for an update. I snapped some photos of the build so far. These show the mods I did to the kit. I widened the torpedo bulge a bit, installed new scupper pipes (large and small), access hatches the compartments on the torpedo bulge, the aircraft refueling line, rebuilt the refueling station(it was a glob of plastic before) the three-pronged (3 per side) item I have yet to identify, and of course the anchor hawse hole "flanges". Painted in 5s (Sea Blue) and lightly weathered.

I also mounted the model on a "build board" (my name for it) so that I can move the model around now without handling it directly. It will be able to be placed under its own display case for dust prevention.. After I paint the black boot, I will be finished on the hull sides. Currently working on all the sub-assemblies(turrets right now).

Hello Tegun:

This is looking quite good. I like your treatment of the anchor hause. What did you use to achieve that. Really looks good.

Mgunns,
I used Sculpey plastic clay. I form it to the general shape, bake it, and then sand it down to the final shape. I used (or re-use due to repair) it for the bow of the Takao where the fairleads/Chrysanthemum crest is located.

I highly recommend the wood decks by Artwox. Very thin and beautiful! Pictures will follow with my next update..

Hello all! Time for an update. During this time I focused on the turrets which are now about 95% finished. I also installed the Artwox wood deck. It goes on easy with only one design flaw. At the bow there is a seam denoting the two wood sheets. This will be spliced soon to hide the seam. Details on the turrets include periscopes on #'s 2 and 3 turret, bucklers, PE bands around the barrels, PE hand rails on turrets, entry hatchway below 2 & 3, and the PE catapult on 3. I will finish up on the turrets and move to the other catapult and crane, then move forward to the O2 level with the casemate guns.

I also added the training gun on top of the turrets and re-ran the lines to them.
