Hey guys,

Is the Arii 1/800 CV-62 Ranger accurate for a Desert Storm era build?

Mark, CV-62 was the Indy not Ranger :Oops_1:

I have the ARii 1/800 Ranger and it seems to be pretty close to the Desert Storm configuration. I do have a thread on it. (I haven't quite started backdating it yet)

Mark, here's the jist of it.

It appears the ARii kits are a mixture of early & late era modifications  I
spent some time going through the kits and researching today and find that the kit has both masts fore & aft of the Island, sponsons for the bow, Yet, both kits are supposedly in Desert Sorm & Persian Gulf era configurations.
I got to looking at the air wing & noticed there are some RA-5Cs but, they were retired in late 1979! Now the F-8s were retired in May 1976. Also there's Hornets, Tomcats, A-6A & Ea-6B not to mention the A-7B on there too!!
Now I need to compare the is;and to some pics to find out which one it represents

If i remember correctly from last time we discussed this on Hippys thread, the Ranger kit does not have the fwd sponsons, not sure about the raked funnel or the lattice mast that held the SPS-49.

I used combined parts from the Arii kit to and the Italeri kit to build my 1998 configuration CV-62. From what i remember the Arii kit was very accurate for a 1990s version of CV-62.

OK, Thanks.

Ed was quite correct, I meant CV-61,( Senior moment after long trip :doh_1: ) but his feedback also answered that question and that is what I am thinking about doing as well. I am trying to fix the Italeri kit and my scratch built sponsons are not getting it done. Ranger was so different that I was afraid that Arii did what all of the other manufactures do, one Forrestal kit fits all.

I guess I need to go deep into Ed's 1/800 Arii thread and do some light reading!

Thanks again,

Mark

Well Ed, after some light reading, I found out that it does not have the sponsons I am looking for. I even asked that same question last summer. I need some of that memory medicine! :lol_spit_1: I am loosing my mind. It is probably on the floor next to some 1/700 aircraft parts!!

Ranger will have to wait for more scratch building motivation. Definately the Italeri re-work though. I am not going to put more money into an acurate box top( silk purse from a pigs ear) only to be disappointed ! I think that I will finnish the Fujimi Kittyhawk and work my way to Ranger.

The starboard aft sponson is looking OK. The port aft sponson is being re-worked and the forward sponsons are, well, :Mad_5: ! Lots more re-work to be done. Ray Beans photos are critical for this one. I also noticed that the island is :Mad_5: as well. It is not all bad though. The smoke stack is correct. The rest of it, not so much. I got the fantail fairly acurate so it is a start.

It would be so cool if DML could do a 1/700 Forrestal Class using the same common parts and a seperate parts tree for each ship just like they do for the Essex Class Carriers. But until then, where is my X-Acto Blade !

I have both the Ranger & Forrestal class CDs from Ray Bean. Both are very helpful in my projects. Not to mention, there's a few shots of the EA-6A abd Saratoga during the time at Pax River. An aircraft my uncle had been the Project Pilot for. 1963-65.
