Subject:
Warships from any nation that served during the time frame of June 1947 thru December 1991. Ship could have been built prior to this time frame but must be built to represent the ship during this time example being but not limited to, Gearing's in FRAM fit, SCB Essex class, IJN Yukikaze in ROC service etc. Some ships maintained a more or less WWII fit well into the 1950's and that is fine just as long as the ship did appear that way during the above mentioned time frame. What if's are allowed as long as they were actual proposed designs or cancelled, example being the BB/CV hybrid of the USS Iowa class.

Rules for Builds:
You may choose to build any scale, kit, scratchbuild or kitbash, dioramas are allowed, however the focus should be the entered build. Only the ship built as an entry will be judged unless ship is alone in a seascape at which time total presentation will be taken into account. Super detailed or OOB, doesn't matter, just have fun and share!
I don't want to way this down with lot's of rules, just as one good pirate would say, "They're more like Guidelines" to keep everything neat and organized so we all can enjoy and have fun.
-Only one entry per builder per category, you may enter into all 3
-Only builds from registered board members will be allowed
-If you are building a Cold War Era Destroyer or Transport, please enter it into the "Cold War" group build
-Final judging is final
-All builds must be started on or after the start date and be completed by or on the end date to qualify for contest. All builds however that fall into the categories that have already been started or will not be completed till after due date are welcome however to share.
-Any questions or concerns with these rules may PM me
-Keep it friendly and fun!
There will be awards for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in each category. There will be an award to the builder that shows the most group spirit during the builds. At the end of the allotted time for each build, the 1st place entry chosen from each category will go into the finals for the grand prize.

This build will run from April 15, 2011 thru October 15, 2011

I will post updates here into this message to keep anything important right on top, so please check back every once and awhile.

Updates:

4-4-2011 The Awards are here! A huge thanks goes out to John @ WEM for sponsoring this build. I don't have it yet to post pics of but WEM is putting up a 1/350 Resin HMS Trenchant to the 1st place winner of this build.

Our "Most Valuable Builder" award or the "MVB" that goes to the person of the three builds that shows the most spirit. You are eligible to win this if you finished in the top three or even if your build didn't place. It is 6X8 with a nice Cherry Wood finish.

To the winner of all three builds will go this very nice glass award. It is 7.25 inches tall with base that is 5.75 inches wide. Picture really doesn't do it justice.

Awards ordered, should see them sometime around the beginning of next month 3-26-2011

I am extremely pleased to announce that White Ensign Models is sponsoring this build. Details to follow soon! 3-21-2011

I just ordered the Cyber Hobby 1/700 USS Long Beach CGN-9 for the "Cold War" build. I also ordered the Gold Medal Models PE 700-10 for the railings. The instructions say that this (kit)"Project supervised by Timothy (Cadman) Dike and Tony Bunch".

Thanks for the four weeks lead time to get everything here and ready for the build.

March 16, 2011

Just received my order from: Pacific Front Hobbies: http://www.pacificfront.com/ . I placed the order on Saturday the 12th and received it on Wednesday the 16th. That is great customer service.

Gee, we just have four weeks to go now!

March 19, 2011

I have spent the last couple of days researching the USS Long Beach on line looking at pictures of the LB and at the models ing the Gallery. There are some wonderful builds in the gallery but I didn't notice anyone saying what paint colors the used to paint the ships. So with an e-mail to Tony and a look through the "Camouflage & Coatings" forum for paint colors ideas given by other modelers the paints have been decided. viewtopic.php?f=69&t=45884

Haze Gray: Model Masters' Neutral Gray FS36270 mixed 2x1 white flat white.
Deck Gray: Model Masters' Gunship Gray FS36118 mixed 2x1 with flat white.

While looking at Tony's Long Beach build in noticed that he used the same Gold Medal Model's PE 700-17 Modern USN/JMSDS that I ordered but with a notation that you need three sets for total the two rail railings you need. Yhe main deck is three rail railing and everything above is two rail. I'm going to order GMM's 700-23 Gold Plus Ultra fine railings for the extra two rail railings I need.

Four weeks to go.

I don't know what I was thinking when I decided to build a 1/700 ship for this "GB"!! It's so small and all those little pieces.

March 24, 2011

I received my Gold Medal Models' pe #700-23 Gold Plus Ultra Fine railings today. Tomorrow I'm going to the LHS (now a 16 mile drive) in Lynnwood to get some paint for this build and check out their model ship selection.

Three weeks to go!!

I'll be building the USS New Jersey 1/350 scale in roughly 1984.

Using:
Flyhawk 1/350 Missouri Super Detail
GMM 1/350 NJ details
Flagship 1/350 NJ details
Veteran models harpoon, tomahawk, phalanx (possibly chaff)
Scaledecks 1/350 NJ wood deck (when it comes out)
L'arsenal super detail accessories

Not sure if I will replace the kit choppers with resin ones yet

Kit will be set in a seascape.

Can I enter a less then 10% started USS Chicago (CG-11) build in 1/500? From the Monogram kit. It really is just barely started, I did some work to the hull ages ago, and that's it.

I'm in with a "whiff" Korean War Era USN Battleship. I'll be refitting a North Carolina-Class BB as per BuShips reactivation plans. I was only able to find a description of said plans and no drawings so some artistic license will be necessary. I'll be using other BBs and CAs from the war as guides. Kit will be a 1/700 Trumpy North Carolina. It'll be waterlined in a seascape but I'm not sure what the ship will be doing just yet. Can't wait to get started!

Oh, dear,
I was hoping this wouldn't come up, as i have a rather nasty 1/500 monagram kit of USS Chicago, so here's the deal.
I will do my destroyer entry first, then all taking part in this fantastic three way group build have full remit, to harrass me via email or PM to build this abonimation of a kit.

I know i'm going to regret this offer but it is my Birthday today, so feel generous. or

Congratulations Roy!
I'm thinking of finally starting my JAG Belknap as a DLG. It would mean rebuilding the masts and some platforms as well as adding two 3" 50s.

pieter :wave_1:
The Chicago will have to be chopped if i start her, the hull is workable so that's one big issue out of the way.
We will see :heh:

LOL Cheater! That is so awesome. You're making the "cruiser" as she was originally designed: a destroyer.

Good call, Pieter! We can't wait to see her.

I'm not sure who is/was cheating here. Friedman has this wonderful story about the DLG 26 design starting as a basic and cheaper variant of the earlier DLGs. In the end they were the largest, most complex and most expensive conventionally powered "destroyers" built until that time. Can't wait to put her next to my Havock.....

Oops! Forgot I needed to jump into this pool first before I got into the Destroyer pool to be registered. I am going to be doing a Whiff version of the Arleigh Burke DDG that Gibbs & Cox came up with that would equip the Burkes with 1 helicopter and replacment of the Mk45 5" gun with a Mk71 8" gun. This study was what inevitably resulted in the Flight IIAs the Navy currently builds.

I would like to throw my name in the hat.

Now, which ship to build???? I think it will be one of the NIKO Cruisers or the Dragon Virginia. So I have until April15th to finish up my current projects.

I am looking forward to seeing all of the builds.

Mark

I know you may not believe this.....but I'm going to join this group build! I have a few modern ships that I never started, so I might as well try one now! This will be neat! I'm also doing the civilian transport group build. Since we have through October 11 to finish them, I should be able to do one of each! :wave_1: :woo_hoo:

I propose to build the JMSDF destroyer Wakaba, in three distinct phases of her career. I will enter the latter build as the 1 official entry in the group build:

Circa 1945, IJN Tachibana Class destroyer Nashi, sunk in an air raid.

Raised in 1954; salvaged, refitted and recommissioned in 1956 as a JMSDF training ship.

Post 1958, when fitted with an ungainly (for this size ship) SPS 8B radar, for radar trial purposes. This latter fit just screams Cold War, despite a relative lack of weaponry.

I've always been interested in seeing these three phases of one ship side-by-side, particularly a ship that was raised from the dead and given new life. Only ship to serve in the JMSDF that was once part of the IJN.

Pit Road just released 2 kits of the Wakaba, one with PE enhancements. I'll build the latter fit with the PE. They also make a Tachibana Class kit which I will need to order.

Ships World featured this ship at some point. Here is a link to an undated article, including photos of the sunk vessel and the SPS radar over the bridge: http://www.ships-net.co.jp/detl/200704/045-049e.html.

Turns out this is from issue No.672, from April 2007.
