I started working on the block house in section three (part numbers C6 and C7)and they have a minor fit problem. I cut the locating pins off of C6 and was able the square the two parts up. With this done, there is still a small fit problem between the two parts but this is hidden mostly by the radar panels. The corners need the most work. If you are doing a 1967 version of this ship you need to open the two other locating slots on part number C6 for the I1 panels. It doesn't tell you to do that in the instructions, so I didn't and will just cut the locating tabs off the back of the I1 panels.

My reply is quite image heavy, just a lot of seem filling on the deck and hull. Note that I am going to be using the wooden deck that is eventually available for this kit, so I have to wait awhile to test fit.

Gordon, did you anticipate this from the dry fit? Looked like it was fitting well at that stage. I have this kit in the stash, and will be taking notes from your build.

I've recently ordered several wood decks for 1:700 scale IJN vessels. Taking a late-war Yamato through a build and love the fit of the deck. Nice to be able to address seams and airbrush deck details knowing that significant masking and/or brush painting won't be necessary.

How does the transition in height from wood deck to plastic/steel deck look in 1:350 scale?

Ok, well the 15th has come and pretty much gone, I see a couple of you have already taken off out of the gate. My apologies for not responding to some of you sooner, work has taken an unpleasant bite out of life for the last few days leaving little time anything else. Looks like no one had any objections to allow a couple of their fellow modelers to use partly/barely started kits so I guess they are in.

Mark, please PM me the details of your started kit and I will see if it falls into the guidelines of the other allowed started kits, sort of sounds like it does.

Gordon and D-boy, Great start gents! And Gordon, I never thought flattery would work so well :wink_3.gif I count myself very lucky in finding a wife who allows me to indulge in my hobby, I assure you though it comes at a price. :heh:

I look forward to everyones builds, and hope all the anticipation will help us along for this 6-month odyssey.

Well now off to the fun!

Matt

Hi Matt,

PM sent. I am still waiting on your verdict to detirmine whether I will do a 1956, SCB-27C (Intrepid, Ticonderoga, or Hancock), or a cold war cruiser. I am leaning towards the 27C just because I think that it would be unique!

I await your decision,

Mark

Go for that prop-jet transition carrier. There's enough guns and missiles in the build; we need some aircover. Interesting that there's no undersea threat on the build, as of yet.

I'm with D-boy, go for a 27C! Still a straight deck, but a nice mix of props and jets. Can't remember the last one of those I've seen built anywhere. DO IT!!!!!

As for my build, I'm finalizing the design and working up a backstory for my Korean era North Carolina. Trying to place the last bits of equipment and running out of room to place them. Still need to order some twin 3"/50s as well. Everything else has been accounted for thankfully. She'll be waterlined but I'm not sure if I'll have her pier side or underway. Suggestions?

Looking good so far! Slightly off topic, whatcha going to be doing with that 1/350 San Francisco in the background?

DrDoom,

Good start to a large kit!

D-Boy,

I like the split personality of your builds for the 2 groups!

Go for pier side! It does add a lot to the appearance of life to the model. You could even have it where she is just finishing her fitting out, anyway you do it it should be interesting to see a North Carolina with twin 3-inch guns and some new kinds of radars.

The minor fit problems have been noted and simple solutions will fix the problems.

D-Boy asked:

Yes, the dry fit showed this problem.

As noted before the block made up of parts C6 and C7 has some minor moulding problems. The upper piece C6 is the major problem where the edges between the two parts don't line up square and the three locating pins were cut off of C6 and that provided a better fit. Two layers of putty smoothed the two pieces and made for a flat surface.

The next picture shows that the radar panels cover up all the putty and that the corners are the real issue with the fit.

File comment: Only the corner edges show after the radar panels are installed.

File comment: This gap between these parts needs to be dealt with in section three and not section ten before the radar panels are glued to the block. The walls and deck of part C23 should be painted first and then the parts assembled.

There is a small fit problem with the forward deck.

File comment: small gap.

This gap is almost completely covered by piece G23 and the small gaps should be taken care of with a little sanding. The gaps between the deck and the hull can also be filled with putty and then the railings actually go over the filled in gap. I removed the front locating pins on part G23 so I could sand the bottom of it for a better fit to the deck.

The only gap is the one between parts G23 and G25 because it is out in the open.

I removed the rear locating pins on part C18 so the bottom could be sanded for a better fit also.

That is the sum of the minor problems that I have run across.

April 20, 2011 One more fit problem found, this is between G23, G25 and the main deck. The problem is fixed with a little scrapping and sanding.
Be sure to check fit often.

taskforce48 asked:

Matt, I would like to take it outside and just shoot it with a BB gun but I bought a GMM pe set for it and that would be a waist of good money. It now sits in the basement and every now and then I take it out of the box and work on it. Last week I worked on finishing up the hull and deck assembly and started on the bridge structure until I decided that there were too many fit problems and I put it back into the box untill the next time.

That's it for now.

Work has started on Hancock, CVA-19.

This is an ISW 700th scale SCB-27A kit of the Essex that I am converting into an SCB-27C Hancock. I got the deck from Nautilus and I started cutting on the aft starboard quarter to install the starboard elevator. There is a lot of re-work to be done there but it should not be a problem.

Here are a few shots of the bench. Salt Lake City, Oklahoma, and Tennesee are waiting for P.E.

This Cold War GB is shaping up quite nicely, we have carriers, battleships, crusiers, destroyers and whiffs. I look forward to seeing your in progress pictures with great anticipation. The more pictures you post the happier I'll be.

Nope! It is the Oklahoma. I am going to do the Nevada in her late war appearance. My goal is all of the U.S. Battleships starting with BB-32, all the U.S. CV's and one of each class of CVL's, CVE's, CA's,CG's, CGN's, CL's, DDG's and DD's. Basically a snapshot of the U.S. Navy from the 30's to present.
