Hi Russ great work. I like very much the neat and clean way you have incorporated the fittings , It's hard to think seeing the sharp pictures that Nagato is "1:200" and not a much larger scale and all scratch built. Outstanding .

thanks dave.well i built my props,i seached all over the place for something the use as blades, dollar stores, wall mart, but nothing jumped out at me.then i went to a scrapebooking store ,and there they where.perfect circles of all differant sizes.they are made of fairly stiff plastic.about 50 in a package for $1.99 .all i had to do to mount them on the shaft was make three cuts with my razer saw at the correct angle.

Hi Russ Making your own props , that is pure scratch building :worship_1: . I have to confess I source mine in from G Sitik , I send him the drawing and back comes the bespoked props . I just can't make them the way I would like.

Never could see all the to do about brass props. Scratchbuilt and painted look fine to me. Great idea and good job! I really enjoy following this build. :thumbs_up_1:

thanks les norbert, dave if my ship was not a static model i would have to buy some custom props also, mine would self destruct in no time, the main reason for doing my own is that i could not find the right dia.and blade number in a brass prop, and at a reasonable price

hello all fellow scratch builders.well i should finish nagato in the new year.i will then have a ww2 battleship from every country except germany.i have a fondness for graf spee, having built a curde model of her 35 years ago.she is not a true battleship but she put fear into the allies who treated her as one.she had a very colorful lifespan, and a true gentleman as a captian.i have to decide what scale 1/200 or maybe 1/144.in 1/144 she would be 57.18 in. long .09375*610=57.18 this is to big for my display cabint :heh: in 1/200 she would be .0625*610 =38.12 in. long.but i would like to try a larger scale as my fingers seem to be getting bigger ,and a ship with out a million tiny a.a guns :heh: .my main concern is plans ,is there a good site that has 1/144 plans available, and photo-etch.my other option would be a ww1 battleship in1/200 or a ww1 cruiser in 1/144.heres a pic of the 35 year old graf spree 1/200 scale.

Hi Russ Fond memories of when I was around 8 or 9 years old converting a discarded hull to "look like", at least in my fertile imagination the Graf Spee. I had many a happy hour sailing the waters of my local model boat pond, it was my South Atlantic. This all became more intense after going to see the 1955 movie "Battle of The River Plate”. Even then I found it difficult to reconcile the USS Salem with the Graf Spee but I also grew to appreciate the graceful line of the Salem. No doubt you will find a suitable subject to model , how about the SMS Derflinger

hi dave .yes it was a bit of a disapointment seeing a american heavy cruiser instead of a pocket battleship,i solved a issue in 1/144 she would be 50.8 "long not 57".57 would have been1/150 scale.derflinger would be cool also.do you know of a site that would have plans in 1/144,i can't seem to find any.

Hi Russ I don't know of any down loads for Derfflinger but one of the good methods used by some is the card equivalent, which in some ways is more useful than a drawing as it can be transposed as a template. Marcle Models have huge selection of model ships, the Derfflinger being one of them .http://www.marcle.co.uk/cataloguehome.html
Here are some pictures taken at these years Dortmund Intermodelbau. Card modelling is a major part of the modelling scene in Germany and the quality is awesome.

Thought you might like to see this a 1:72 Graf Spee, also at Dortmund.

Hi Russ A complex track and catapult system and that's just in model form . Nagato is progressing superbly well accomplishing the kind of detail you have shown here with great skill and at 1:200 a scale :cool_2: :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1:

thanks for looking in jim,1/200 must seem huge to you,but for me it seems dam small.how you can build them tiny
models is amazing.as i was telling dave my next ship will be maybe a 1/200 german battlecriuser or a 1/144 graf spree . for graf spree i cannot seem to find plans in 1/144 or much photo-etch mainly for ladders and railing, or barrels i do not have a lathe so i have to buy barrels .if i go with her i will have to see if a printing shop can take 1/200 and blow them up to 1/144.gpm models seems to have a lot of stuff for german battlecruisers,i have not found plans in 1/200 for them yet. hi there norbert how's bismark coming along?

For a plan of German battlecruisers in 1/200, there is a Turkish publication for ex-SMS Goeben, which became the Yavuz. It contains drawings ranging from 1:100 for bow/stern/superstructure decks to 1:250 for overhead and profile views along with the body lines. The book also contains plans for the light cruiser Midilli, ex-SMS Breslau.

Here's a link to the book on a Turkish book site:

well its time for rigging,i try'd streched spruge,it works fine but,i get a few done and them one will let go :heh: .my main problum is 2 years ago i crushed my left thumb,it now does not bend and has no feeling.and i am left handed.try'd thin thread but it does not look great.i went to a sporting goods store and found a very thin fishing line used for fly fishing leeder,it is about 2 lb.breaking strength and only .127mm thick.i will more than likly use thread for davits and cranes as the fishing line will not hang right when going through blocks and pullys.
