Dave, your build of Kiev has been inspirational and a good insite for scratch building detail. I hope the webmasters never take it down after it is completed. I've wanted to build a Kiev carrier for years, but as a consistant 1:72 scale modeller she would be massive in size. Still your build has been inspirational, I may just do it. Look forward to seeing your next project.

Robert

Hi Robert I am pleased that you have found the Kiev build log useful, particularly as it may be of help in your proposed build of a larger scale Kiev model. I hope that CADMAN will find a good way to preserve all the build logs which are now posted as a sticky and of course others that may be posted as such in the future. I am confident he will. Thanks for looking in and I will be commencing a new build in the very near future so keep looking in and thanks for your interest.

Hi Dave

Some time ago you mentioned the ship model exhibition that takes place each year at Ellesmere Port, and I seem to remember it is around March. I wonder if you could post some info please or direct me to a web site where I will find it.

With kind regards and thanks in advance
Michael

Hi Mike did you get my PM regarding this event.

This really marks the end of an era for this board...

A great model from a master craftsman...

An inspiration (along with the Admiral's builds and Bill Waldorf's ones) for all scratch-builders...

Congratulations Mr Wooley and may the next one be even better...

Nick thank you so much for such praise. I never loose sight of the fact that I am still on a learning curve and long may that curve continue. Only today I have just successfully solved a long standing problem of how to present diagonal rope webbing that covers the inside of the crash barriers one of the very last jobs of work that I kept putting off :woo_hoo: I just love this hobby it keeps my brain working :heh:

The last outstanding job on Kiev was the diagonal rope that will form the covering over each of the crash barriers. Some months ago I made these from etched fret for the crash barriers located right aft . For the remainder I have explored a different medium to achieve the same result at a fraction of the cost. So here is the very last part of the Kiev build before I show the entire model as a completed build.
The barriers are covered with diagonal rope matting for this I decided to make use of an inexpensive sheet of aluminium reinforcement mesh.

However there was a problem in its cross section .To reduce this and achieve the desired rope matting effect the aluminium matt was sanded down until the thickness was almost compatible with that of the PE.
Aluminium mesh has the advantage of being very soft and malleable but above all it is very easy to cut.

The length is cut to size

A prepared section that will correspond with the frame of the crash barrier. Here 20 where needed, these where all cut to size and painted a very light grey as they appear is the photos.

Mesh and barrier ready to be fitted together.

This is made up from the etched fret

This is the results from the aluminium mesh

Once again the stern crash barriers using etched fret

The barriers using the reworked aluminium mesh

Well that is it as far as the construction side goes all that remains are a few pictures that I’ll post up as a post script which will show Kiev for the FIRST time as a completed model.

What else can be said, it's certainly the best Kiev model in existence up till now! And I doubt anybody will make them any better than this after all!!! Great job and 4 years definitely require a lot of persistence and patience! Up to the next, probably (and perhaps hopefully for you) shorter, project. :woo_hoo: :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1:

Thank you Neptune my friend . Yes you are right I shall be concentrating on a less demanding and SMALLER build but larger scale for my next project . All will be revealed in due course .

Hello Dave, Well, congradulations on completion of this 4 year project. Your persistance and determination show here in this build. Looking at the photos many of your scratchbuilt parts look injection molded. An outstanding acheivment. I am certain that you are proud of her, as I would be. Hard to let them go, is it not? I wish you all the best in your new endeavor, and I am sure it will be as usual, top notch. Thanks for sharing with all of us. I hope that we will continue to be friends, and compare notes from time to time, even though, sadly, we have never met. Once again, a superb replica of the Kiev. More than a "model"...........Bill W. :thumbs_up_1: :wave_1:
