July is still on the cards !I'll try to get Howie to come and bring his Derfflinger ? Fat chance though he's a slower builder than I am and that's saying something !

I keep popping in for a look and it's starting to look more like a carrier now that you are working on the deck work. Are you concentrating on this ship more than the battleship Marlborough, or are you working on both models at the same time?

You have worked wonder's so far on both of them.

Victorious will be laid up at the end of next week, when I should have all the framing in place and the flight deck all cut out as per the plan. There are quite a few objects along the edge of the flight deck, such as gun, searchlight, and director platforms, until these have been put in position, I cannot trim the flight deck edges. Once all this has been done, I will be getting back to doing the Marlborough.

Not much done today, except that the front 40 inch searchlight platforms have been fitted to the edge of the flight deck and the 4.5 inch gun platforms have been modified as per the plans. This more or less completes the front section for now. I will have some photos tomorrow evening, as I make a start on the main middle section.

Afraid not Dave, there is quite a lot of work on this, as I will have to completely build a new one from scratch, the Deans moulding is way over size and not the correct shape.

Having spent all that money on the hull, I am beginning to wonder if I would have been better scratchbuilding the whole ship. The amount of work trying to get the hull to resemble the plans, are not as simple as it seems. Deans have got their sums wrong, somewhere along the line, as although the hull, is of the correct length and width, the island does not sit forward enough. Deans have placed it bang in the middle, and it should be 5 inches further forward, so I am just having to do as best I can, to ressemble the proper plans.

Hi Geoff This is a problem when relying on manufactured hulls and superstructure. So long as the hull is accurate then the the rest can be scratch built . What plans came with the hull ?

None, I am using the Maritime Museum plans of Illustrious, the ones Ron gave me, they don't come any more accurate than those.
Deans borrowed some plans of H.M.S. Idefatigable when they made the hull, and the Indefat and Inplaccable, although still Ilustrious Class, were the last two of the six to be built, and I think their superstructures were brough further forward, for some reason.
If you ask me, I think Deans have made a bit of everything from what information they had. They obviously hadn't researched it properly.

Only the ones from the Anatomy Book and a few I found on the net. I could do with some more, but most pictures of the Vic, were taken after she was modernised.

I have the Anatomy book and like all the series it's a must for the modeller . I wonder if the IWM have any pictures but this would depend on the period you intend to model Victorious in. Some times i feel we Brits got a rew deal in the wartime photo stakes. Were as the USN photographed every thing , we did very little which of course is a great shame.

My best option is to build it as launched (1941) as my plans are based on this and like you say, the Anatomy book has some good detailed drawings of all the fittings etc.
She reamained in this condition untill 1944 when she was reffited at Liverpool. The mast was replaced from the tripod, to a lattice type and quite a few more mods to the armament and detecting equipment etc.
So the early period, I have the most information.

As I said before, it is wonderful to see a real carrier being built, though it's something I wouldn't attempt. More power to your elbow Sire.

Re Herr Vooley's comment about me being a slower builder than him, ask him who took eight or so years to build the 'Blucher'. Slow I might be, but a fusspot I ain't.

Hi Howie, I have always wanted to build a carrier and chose Victorious, because, spent quite a lot of time in her company, during the sixties, when I served on one of her escort frigates, although, she had been modernised then.
I may be bringing it on April 2nd so that other's can see what I have done so far.

looking forward to seeing your progress pictures, i do not have the room to build such a large scale model so i will stick to the 1/400 Heller, a great improvment on the 1/700 Aoshima kits!!
