After a Copy of This Book Please

Hi chaps I'm searching for this book please to help me with my research.

The Shipbuilding Industry - A Guide to Historical Records, edited by Ritchie and published by Manchester University Press in 1992

The last time I was at the National Maritime Museum I used this book and it was darn handy so I now wish to get a copy to help me continue with my research.

I've tried Abebooks, Amazon UK & USA, Bookfinder and a Google search to no avail.

I find it hard to believe its so scare when it was published only in 1992.

Any help welcome please chaps

I've bought from them for years, even got an account with them, but normally their catalogue is listed on Abebooks.

I'll give them a ring now!

just for fun I tried MUP, and got that is was published 13 aug. 1992, and is not available, so tried Bookfinder, and they came up with a copy at ecampus.com for 63�.

I spotted that one Terry, but this being an academic type of book I assumed they would not have it in stock and it was merely on there like Amazon to order it for them to try and locate one.

One strange one is the publisher is different, its not given as the MUP.

Still I've given an order in to see if they accept UK orders. it seems as they are some sort of academic book selling site for the USA.

Well still this book hasn't turned up from this American campus academic bookseller thingy, they emailed about 2 weeks ago saying there was a delay, wonder if I'll ever be able to find this book!

ecampus cancelled my order without telling me, I guess their copy for sale on their site was a catalogue/database error or they realised its out-of-print only when they tried to order one!

So I'm on the bread-crumb trail again

Can anyone suggest where else I could buy a copy of this book from please?
It would be damn helpful for my research.

Hi Mark I'm led to believe this book details where most of the British Shipbuilding records are housed across the country. I managed to look at a copy on one visit to the Brass Foundry at the National Maritime Museum.

I've tried to locate one at reasonable money, but failed, I'm going to order a copy on-loan free-of-charge through my university from the British Library and see if one turns up. I'm not sure what pages I need I know its a big book and I may need to scan the whole thing

I am going to send the book by surface mail, as air mail would be too expensive.
At this time I have been given a new E Mail address but one of the dogs ate the note that I wrote it down on. I also cannot seem to find a way to open the E mail section as of yet.
I suspect that it will a few days before every thing is working for me.

I've been on the lookout for this book since this thread started last year.

On Saturday I noticed a copy was listed at ABE for �15, so I immediately snapped it up. It arrived today.

Here's the cover blurb for those interested:

Shipbuilding has long been of importance to Britain as a maritime nation. However, profound changes in the industry during the nineteenth century brought British shipbuilding to a position in which it dominated the world's markets.

Although such a marked pre-eminence could not be sustained, shipbuilding remained important to the British economy well into the twentieth century.

This book seeks to facilitate study of the industry by making available information on the present location of shipbuilding archives. It features brief histories of some two hundred businesses along with lists of their surviving records. It should be invaluable for local history and reference libraries, record offices, academic institutions and corporate libraries.

The book includes contributions from such specialists as Professor Anthony Slaven who provides a brief history of the industry and Michael Moss who offers an introduction to the nature and value of the historical records of shipbuilders. The editor, L. A. Ritchie, is a Curatorial Officer at the Royal Commission on Historical Manuscripts.

This guide is the second in a series of industry-based archive studies promoted by the Business Archives Council.

I'm not sure how much of the information would have changed since the book was published in 1992, but in any event it provides a good starting point for further research.
