I've built the Skywave kits of both the sumner and Gearing class DDs. They are pretty good, the only thing is the hull which is pretty off. You could kitbash the Albatros and Skywave kits. Or you could widen a Fletcher hull which might be easier, but this would only work for the sumners.

Handsome looking Destroyers. I like the Sumner's better than the Gearings, a little more fierce looking, IMO, with the shorter hull. I built the old Tom's ModelWorks Sumner for a vet friend of mine back in 2004:

I also built the YMW Gearing, which was recently in the "What's New Gallery".
I have the YMW Shea in the stash, looks like a nice kit.

Dear Martin, your "Shea" is a nice model, and I saved all pics.....nice work......I like these ships in the FRAM configs....... Brazil took 5 Sumners and 2 Gearings in its Navy and I saw all these ships 1:1...superb engineering!!!

model Ship parts

Post by Jimmy Conway »

Dear, I'm posting some pics of my model. It retreats the ex-USS James C. Owens as transferred to Brazilian Navy and renamed Contratorpedeiro " Segipe". Contratorpedeiro is the portuguese term for DESTROYER. These images are posted just for curiosity and I'm sorry to say that don't wait fast progress in the building as I'm not some "Admiral" like Ron Horabin ( ARH ) and other very excelent modellers who are members of this forum. I'm waving, yes, but like a drop! All the parts of the ship will be scratch, from keel to the top of the mast, and I'm not going to insert any manufctured. Hope you enjoy these simple pics. Jimmy

RE: Gearing Class

Post by Seeling »

Hi all-
Has there been any Gearing class models of a larger scale than 1/350th? Is there one made of this scale or larger in plastic? I have not seen any in stores or over the internet that I have seen though I have not checked lately. Let me know if anyone has seen one.
Thanks-
Jeff

In plastic not that I know of. However BaD ship model offers both WW2 and FRAMed versions in wood in 1/96 and the SSY offers a fiberglass hull with an extensive line of fittings for them in 1/48, 1/96, and 1/192 scales.....

gentleman and ladies if present i am in a quandary my father served on the Meredeth and i am wanting desperately to build a model for him but as luck would have it i live on disability a air force veteran it is not much but i really want to do this for him as his fondest memories were on this ship. i can spend little time on the computer looking up info for the plans for this ship as my hands and arms have been damaged (nerve damage) perhaps to be fixed later who knows. But i am at my wits end getting the info i would need to scratch build one or even obtain a kit if i could afford one. i know it would be hard to do this build but i am home bound and need something to keep me from going crazy although i am in great pain all the time i need to keep my mind occupied and still use my hands and fingers i do not want to lose the power to build. i know it sounds stupid to want to continue on building but even if i have to tie with a rubber band the tools needed to build i will continue. any help on the gearing class plans and or info i would be greatly appreciative and honored to be part of this topic as i build the "Meredeth"
thanks doc

Just to be sure we are all talking about the same ship, there were THREE Meredith's associated with WW-II. DD-434 was a Gleaves class, and was sunk at Guadalcanal. DD-726 was a Sumner, lost at Normandy. Lastly, DD-890 was a Gearing, and she commissioned right at the end of the war. Is the last one the correct one?

Dear Dr. Hemlock, drop me some lines to mail and I think I have a lot of material to send you. Let's do some study on USS Meredith dd 890. Hope you have the strong enough to face this challenge, the scratchbuilding, but it it is the same for all of us! I have some instructions to build the hull, as I'm doing with my Sumner, that has bit differences, but it is possible to convert over to Gearings. Some files I have too bring a lot of pictures for this class. This week I received from Spain, from our friend Francisco Perez, some photos with details in close ups for the mast of Gearings. It would be nice if some of our friends in the forum could point some kit, even I don't any.
My nice regards, from Brazil: Jimmy

You are going to feature DD 890 as built or "framed"? Meredith was submited to a FRAM modernization in the 60's.
