how do i work out what size chain i need for a 1/350 ship? i dont get the links per inch thing

I usually just use the thickness as criterion. Between 1 and 3 mm depending on the ship's size..

How about an anchor chain for the 1/200 Nichimo Yamato? I need to get one because my display model did not come with it....

For my 1/350 yamato Im using 2 mm one, and it looks "right". For 1/200 I'd use 3-3.5 mm one.

When you say 3-3.5 millimeters do you mean that ought to be the length of each link?

I viewed a close-up of the foredeck of the 1/10 scale Yamato at the Kure Yamato Museum. I counted about 60 chain links on the foredeck, which worked out to about 11.5 links per inch on the Nichimo kit.

Then I ordered a couple of 12-links per inch blackened brass chains from an Internet ship store. Keep your fingers crossed that they fit in the smaller of the two holes on the deck!!!!!

Ummmmm, that's why they make drills and needle files.

Actually, a lot of times holes for chain are molded too small. *Assuming* he scaled the chain correctly if the holes are too small they need to be reamed to scale. Typically most manufacturers mold the chain locker entries too small for scale chain.....generally they get the hawse pipes close.........well except Trumpeter, they haven't yet figured out what hawse pipes are..................

Actually, since I've gotten the right size chain on order (see post above), I will most certainly make sure it fits - even if I have to widen the hole just a wee bit.....

That's the best way to do it. On some projects you get lucky and there's a cover that goes over the chain locker entry, then you can oversize the hole a little and the cover hides it. US DD's are a case in point.

Find a photo of the front part of the ship you are making. Count the links between the holes on the deck. Than measure the distance on your model with a ruler. Divide and you got the number of links per inch you need to get.

I worked this method out by counting the links on the deck of the 1/100 Yamato model photos (Kure, Japan).

If you can find a close-up photo of the ship you're making, this is a fool-proof method to get it right.
