Are there any available books out there about the WWII German Raiders like the Atlantis? And does anyone know if the movie "Under Ten Flags" was about this subject and still available?

Atlantis - there's a book which covers most of the German raiders.

Also there is

"The German Raider Atlantis" by Wolfgang Frank and Bernhard Rogge

http://www.abebooks.com/servlet/BookDet ... ts%26x%3D0

I recommend the Frank/Rogge book.

Cheers,

Rob

"Atlantis, The Story of a German Surface Raider", by Mohr & Sellwood
1955 Published in London by Werner Laurie

Mohr was captain of Atlantis, thus a first hand account of the ship and her men.

" The Cruise of The German Raider Atlantis" by Joesph P. Slavick
USNI Press 2003

A good general history of the ship, based on a wide range of sources

I recommend both books as they look at the story from on board and from a general hisory perspective

Also a good complete history of all the Raiders by ship is:

"Hitler's Secret Pirate Fleet" by James R. Duffy 2001 Published by Praeger

Each ship's career is covered with a 20-30 page short history. Title is kinda dumb, but the book is good.

David Woodward wrote the Secret Raiders back in 1955. I pulled my old copy out and am reading it now. It contains chapter long summaries of the career of the nine merchant conversions that were able to go raiding. Once Woodward gets by some extraneous WWI naval history, it is pretty readable. I don't know how the book compares with the Hitler's Pirate book. I saw the Pirate book once at Borders Books & it did look interesting.

I might add the book: "German Raiders, A history of auxiliary cruisers of the German Navy 1895-1945" by Paul Schmalenbach

published by Patrick Stephens Ltd. United Kingdom

re-published in the USA by the UNSI Press 1979

This is a complete history of all aspects of the ships, equipment, methods of operation, war records, crews etc. etc.

It is a must have volume for anyone interested in the German Aux. Cruisers operating as merchant raiders. A real treasure of photos and hard to find information on these ships and their crews. :thumbs_up_1:

I built this ship at 1/100 for a client many years ago after spending 18 months researching the ship , all over Europe and elsewhere. Subsequently I drew up a set of plans at 1.200 that I believe is the only true representation of this famous Raider. I have all the books published and the Van Heflin film "Under 10 Flags" I have many fittings in my catalogue for this ship at 1/100 scale . If anyone needs more information then contact me on http://www.johnrhaynes.shipmodels@virgin.net----John R Haynes.com
