Drilling out Barrels?

I just found my dad's drill press after we moved hee I could never find it. I want to drill out some 1/700 barrels. How do you do it without breaking them?

Verrry carefully. I would never use a machine to drill out 1/700 barrels- I'd only do it by hand. If the press as a good vice, and is easy to setup something as small and round as 1/700 barrels, then use it for the jig- but I'd still consider turning the chuck by hand.

Personally, I'd use a pin vise. Or MAYBE the Tamiya Hand Drill.

You'll have to do it by hand. The speed on the drill press goes to fast for the plastic, even when turned down to min. You'll melt the plastic instead of drilling. You'r much better off doing the work by hand, it's time consuming but there is less chance for error.

What I do is use one of my modelling knives (Xacto blade, etc.) and place the very tip in the center of the barrel tip, then turn, gouging out a hole in the tip. It's a suitable facsmile of a hollow barrel.

I bought a couple of these, great quality and come with 12 assorted twist drills.

Use REALLY tiny drill bits, like #73 or even smaller depending on barrel diameter. Place in pine vise, spin s-l-o-w-l-y on end of barrel which is held in other hand.
