Re: Calling all IJN Destroyer/DE fans
Hi, sorry for the long post, it's my first time here. I'm trying to build Hasegawa's 1/700 Asashimo model (my first ship model) and was thinking of adding rigging on it. However the kit doesnt come with any plans. Hours of searching on the net for a guide proved fruitless. Does anybody have pictures/references on where the rigging goes in Asashimo or any Yugumo class destroyers?
Also, is it appropriate to use fine guitar wire for the rigging in 1/700 scale?
Any input would be of great help!
Thanks in advance!

Re: Calling all IJN Destroyer/DE fans
I realize I never posted any pics - most that I have web ready are really too small to be of much help. THis one of Kiyonami, 1944, migh be worthwhile. note she has a late type director and cupola
Also, on rigging, as I pointed out in another thread, the Yugumos are basically a refinement of the Kageros and the proceeding Asashios. As such, the rigging layouts are almost identical, though late war rigs are different form early war rigs. I did a lot of reseach for my Asashio type Asagumo including rigging, so view here:http://www.modelshipgallery.com/gallery/dd/ijn/asagumo-700-dk/dk-index.html
Also this excellent build of the Kagero type - Hamakaze by Yufei Mao has a good rigging scheme:http://www.modelshipgallery.com/gallery/dd/ijn/hamakaze-700-ym/ym-index.html

I'll repost the links:

As for rigging and guitar wire - depends on how thick it is. I use the now hard to fine Dai Riki 9X at .002", which scales out to 1.4". I understand the 8X might still be available, That's .003" scaling out to 2.1'. Still, hard to tell the difference in 1/700.
And here's a closeup of Makanami's midsection after bomb damage in mid 1943.

sir Dan K
thanks so much for the information! Now I have an idea on where those lines will go. The pictures in your gallery were of great help (great model too, wish i could make one as good as that *sighs*). All that's left is for me to find those fine wires and get started. Thanks again sir!

Re: Calling all IJN Destroyer/DE fans
Does anyone have a closeup picture of the portion of Akizuki's hull abreast of the bridge, just ahead of the end of the f'c'stle deck?
On later IJN destroyers the deck at the back end of the f'c'stle turns smoothly down to meet the hull side instead of just ending abruptly at the top of the hull side. Hobby Station's Akizuki does not depict this design. I want to confirm whether Akizuki did indeed have this smooth turn at the edge of the deck.

Ed Low did some fantastic 3D drawings some years ago. http://www.steelnavy.com/Akizuki3D.htmchuck wrote:Does anyone have a closeup picture of the portion of Akizuki's hull abreast of the bridge, just ahead of the end of the f'c'stle deck?

They show the turn down as neither abrupt nor smooth but more of a chine pattern.

Re: Calling all IJN Destroyer/DE fans
My new Isokaze arrived today. Its suppose to be one of the new release versions of the Kagero class.
The kit itself looks nice crisp and clean. The biggest surprise is that it comes with an extra sprue full of little goodies. There are extra (more detailed) twin turrets, torpedo tubes, extra dual and triple 25mm light AA, single 12.8cm turrets, 12.8cm heavy flak, paravanes and the like but also 4 different float planes.
According to combinedfleet.com the Isokaze had her X turret removed near the end of 1943 due to damage....since the kit portrays her in 45, there's just a single fore and aft turret so at least they got that right.
Should work well with Lionroar's new Kagero PE set.

Re: Calling all IJN Destroyer/DE fans
I also got this kit. It's a repop of the Yukikaze with parts to build her as early, midw or late war. THe first two version retined all 3 turrets. I think it a cost effective version, given all the PE that comes with the kit. Including barrels. It will also helpp round out another version of the Yukikaze kit, if I ever decide to build them. (1-350, you know). Am awaiting on the new Tamiya kit.

Kagero class is in stiff competition with Fletcher class to the the most over-represented WWII destroyers in 1/350.

Re: Calling all IJN Destroyer/DE fans
Is the extra 12.8cm turret the enclosed variety? If so, that implies that an earlier Japanese 5 gun destroyer is in the offering. Can you tell me which 4 float planes came with it? Do the extra turrets and torpedo tubes represent the same model of equipment that came on the original sprues? Or do they represent different equipment and hint at other future releases?Mr. Grumpy wrote:

Re: Calling all IJN Destroyer/DE fans
the 12.7cm is an open mount.
1 each: A RUFE, a GLEN, a REX, and a SEIRAN.
There are two different versions (according to them) of triple mounted torpedo tubes. There are quad tubes too.
there are deck guns for submarines too.
with the various versions of the main DD armament and torpedo tubes...the extra weapons sprue should cover more than one kit.

Re: Calling all IJN Destroyer/DE fans
Yeah, yeah. It's all about ROOM, Marty
My Isokaze kit came with none of those planes, or extras other than the 3rd 12.7cm turret, and parts to build different fits. Other than the Matsu/Tachibana class, no first rate IJN DD carried an open 12.7cm40cal. mount. Maybe your extra's were an accident; something from Nagato?
The 12.7cm 50cal turret "C" turret with the kit was used on virtually every IJN DD from the refitted Fubukis thru the Kageros. It's also visually identical to the "D" mount used on the Yugumos and Shimakaze.
