Hello,

Can anybody suggest where I can find a copy of Peter Johnson's book, "HMS Quilliam And The Q Class Destroyers Of The Royal Navy". None of the places I've tried were able to supply it.

Thank you.

Thanks for the suggestion. Tellingly countrybookshop.co.uk state that the book has to be "ordered upon request", which is the same as everywhere else. Consequently they would appear no more likely to secure a copy than the other 4 places I've already tried!

I suppose I should be asking whether there's a source that can definitely supply a copy. Has anybody actually bought it?

It's odd that not a single copy is available anywhere, new or second hand. I'm beginning to wonder if the book was ever actually published!

I have this book.
The John Lambert drawings in it are good, though the standard of the publishing and photo-reproduction isn't up to much.
Try abebooks or bookfinder or amazon websites and you should be able to find some as it was only published a few years ago.
Cheers
Laurence

Thanks, it's a relief to know the book actually exists!

Yes, I have tried all of those, but there isn't a single copy anywhere. The fact that it's only a couple of years old makes it all the more frustrating.

It was produced by a fomer crewmembers son if memory recalls.
I had to get mine from Oz about 2-3 years ago.
Have you checked Amazon.usa?

Yes. I've looked everywhere, for a long time. And no joy anywhere. It must have been printed in very small numbers.

There's one listed on an Italian site for sale, but as ever its not instock:

http://www.bookfinder.com/search/?ac=sl&st=sl&qi=PiBOEcSd7ddC,QPnzwZ30OjMtQM_4658700210_1:29:339

If still no luck then your best bet is to try the premier maritime book dealers in the UK such as Fisher Nautical, GL Green and Frank Smith etc.
Most don't list their full catalogues online as they like to remain loyal to their pre-internet days customers.

Start with these good people via email or call them:

If I can find where my copy is I might be able to get you in touch with the author or publisher?

Thanks for the tips Laurence; I'll follow them up. :thumbs_up_1:

The book was self-published, so presumably no known publisher is listed. Knowing where it was printed might help though. I did find an email address for Peter Johnson but it didn't work.

Again thanks for the suggestion. That's the same retailer that Laurence linked to in his previous message. Unfortunately they list it as "Usually available for shipment within 3-5 weeks". In other words they don't have it!

There are plenty of places that will try to back order this book - bookkoob.co.uk lists 8 for instance - but after trying unsuccessfully 4 times now I've given up. Evidently there are no copies in the supply chain. I really need somewhere that has it in stock.

That's an excellent suggestion. Motor Books often have interesting titles in stock long after they've become unavailable online. However it so happens that I visited both their London and Oxford shops some 6 weeks ago and neither had it.

I think I'll just have to wait for a copy to turn up on the second hand market. Everything turns up sooner or later.

Perhaps do a worldwide search for Quilliam on eBay and save the search that way it will email you when something with her name in the title is listed.

Dear linux,

I've tracked him down and asked if he has any copies spare.
I await his reply.

Regards
Laurence

GOT IT!

I had been resigned to a long wait for a second hand copy, but Laurence has come up trumps. Many many thanks Laurence :thumbs_up_1:

If anyone else is interested, Peter Johnson has five spare copies left.
