Calling all King George V-class (WWII) fans

Work on my 1/350 scale HMS Duke of York, 1945, continues.
White Ensign Models resin and PE quad PomPoms are now installed.
The kit's octuple PomPoms (shown in the first photo below) will be replaced by
WEM resin and PE mounts shortly.
The kit's 20mm Oerlikons (also shown in the photo) will also be replaced.
Painting touch-up and drybrushing to bring out the details is also yet to come.
As shown in earlier posts, the main deck is V-groove Evergreen styrene sheet.

Hallo everybody

I have ordered today the King George V of Tamiya scale 1:350 I hope that I did the correct one ordered. I am nearly in this type as I have restarted building models after more then 40 years do nothing at all

I started again with building AFV but I am back to my old stuff the warships. presently I am building the HMS Ilisstrious of Heller and I have done the first time in my live the camo colours. And I am very happy with the results

Regarding trhe camo colours can somebody help me. I saw on the catalogue that the hull have only two different colors ligt/dark grey are they the correct colours or can I have a look in a webiste which is unknown to me

I hope that somebody can help so that I can build the King George on a correct way

Hi All,

Does anyone have to hand the current collective opinion on the deck colours for KGV in 1945? I'm going with teak for the main decks but I'm not so sure about the steel decks.

Hi Andrew

In her [HMS King George V] Admiralty Standard camouflage in 1945, the steel decks were painted G.10. The scheme also used countershading, as follows:

Countershading: Paint the following white:
A. Underside of blast shields, flag decks, boats, Pom-Pom decks and other platforms.
B. Lockers, vents, davits, etc.
C. All darken ship screens, canvas covers for reels, etc.
D. Lower 1/3 of gun barrels, searchlights, etc.
E. Masts and crow�s nest.
F. Insides of gun shields.
G. Stanchions and other small fittings on upper deck.

Hi,
I got a problem with the orientation of the propellers on my model of HMS Prince of Wales. Due to unexpected circumstances (i.e. my stupidity) I don't know which propeller to put on which side. I tried to google for information but got none. Can anyone here help?

If you really like any one of the first three schemes, particularly the the dramatic Admiralty Intermediate Disruptive Scheme KGV wore in 1942-1943 as many do, you would be more historically accurate to use the Tamiya Prince of Wales kit with the catapult and Walrus amphibian then paint it as KGV.

As someone who wants to model the KGV in 1941, could someone tell me what modifications would need to be done to the PoW to model the KGV in that period?

Hello Matt!

In 1941, they were nearly identical. According to "King George V Class Battleships" by Roger Chesneau, pgs. 50- 51,
KGV had four UP mountings until December of that year. One was located on "B" Turret roof, two abreast on "Y" Turret
roof (the aft turret), and one on the quarterdeck (good photos pg 49-51).

I'm starting my third KGV build,this time I want to do it right with complete PE which I already have.The question I have is about brass barrels to replace the plastic 14 inch gun barrels.Does anyone make them?I can't find any!!

You didn't say which scale your building in.
Hobbylink sell KGV 1/350 14-inch (instock) and 5.25-inch (out-of-stock) ones by Fukuya.
For 1/700, 1/600 or 1/400 your best bet would be to contact these people:-

KGV wore a very sedate, medium gray overall during the Bismarck fight in 1941

I have another question,were the KGV's ever fitted with blast bags during or postwar?If not,why were'nt they.I'm also looking for a source for post war pictures of the KGV class.I'm doing mine as she appeared in postwar years,not very interesting I know.

You will also be able to get BMK to do 1/350 KGV barrels for you as a custom order.

No KGV class ever had blast bags at anytime of their existence.

Post-war photos of KGV war class you will be a little limited.
Generaly speaking you will have the 1946-1949 ones such as Wright & Logan ones in and around Portsmouth.
You will have the photos showing them operating in say Australia in 1946 and also the ones just after of them coming home.
After 1949 you can find some more of them laid up in the Gareloch.
And then finally of them being scrapped in Scottish yards.

Perhaps your best source, apart form the internet (Google image search and http://www.navyphotos.co.uk/index6.htm), would be the To Sail No More series of photo books by Maritime Books (http://www.navybooks.co.uk).
I'm particularly thinking of the ones with contributions by Dr Ian Buxton who has a number of photos of KGV class vessels in their final days and includes some in those books.

If you've got big money to spend I could mention several other sources as the KGV class are a well photographed group of ships.

If you wish to learn more about the gunnery hits then Garzke & Dulin in Allied Battleships in WW2 give the most detailed examination of PoW's damage from Bismarck and Prinz Eugen I've seen published.
On pages 180 to 191 the engagement is detailed and it includes plans and photographs of PoW's damage.
This is the ONLY book with data published from HMS Excellent (the Royal Navys damage control and gunnery school) including official photographs which come from there.

Furthermore if he wants a technical examination of the 6 torpedoes which sank her then that also follows in subsequent pages of the same book, again with profile and deck plans showing hits and flooding.

Thanks Laurence for the link and info.I found a few good photos on the Wright & Logan site along with a nice photo of HMS Vanguard.Don't get me started on my wish for HMS Vanguard in 1/350 scale.I'm going to buy the few that I found there.I don't have a lot of cash to spend but I'd love to know the other sources too.

One thing which springs to mind with Vanguard is a small souvenir booklet which was printed when she carried the Royals to South Africa.
Inside are numerous photos and you can buy a copy on eBay as it regularly comes up for sale.
