Hi together

we have some very nice finished Hood here in the Gallery (Bernd Villhauer, Frank Spar, Jim Bauman) .
Especially bcuz we got one here under Construction by EPinniger i felt free to ad some Shots from my Slipway too.

In the Moment i fit out the Center- and Boatdeck. Its Fun to build it. There are some crispy Nuts to crack and its good to improve Skills in Preparation to a following Project.



I have Question to you Guys:
Does anyone know a good Online Source of the Way to bring Signalflags in the right Position? There are Differences of flying a Flag during Battle or Mooring. Does anyone knows about the Principles?
It would be very interesting for me to know more about.

Hi Foeth,

i studied your X-Tower alreday very intensive. Great Piece of Work! I decided to use two Sources for the May 1941 Config.

The first is the "External Profile and Plan as in May 1941" from the "Anatomy of the Battleship, The Battlecruiser Hood" Revised Edition by John Roberts.

The Second is the Rendering by Thomas Schmidt.

I hade to decide for one Version. Sources dont speak the same Language unfortunately.

I decided to use two Sources for the May 1941 Config.

The first is the "External Profile and Plan as in May 1941" from the "Anatomy of the Battleship, The Battlecruiser Hood" Revised Edition by John Roberts.

The Second is the Rendering by Thomas Schmidt.

Both are wrong, though Schmidt's model is incorporating more of the newer finds Here's a pic from the official HMS Hood site





As you can see, it's a frame consisting of 8 crosses. The center two were removed, although I don't know why the rest were still on the turret (not on this picture, but later). The frame overhangs as on the pic, though I think it was about 1mm too long on my model.

good Work of Research! I was checking some pics of Thomas today and found out that he changed his Graphics.




I dont know if i gonna change my Turret. Probably not. I could try to make some Crosses and a Frame around it, by using some Plastics from my "Special Box". Maybe it looks more crap as the PE Pieces then. Maybe it looks better. The Turret is not fixed at the Model and i give my self Time to think about a Change.
We �ll see. But thank you 4 the Input anyway!



oh...btw... do you know something about the After Superstructure? Took some Exhaust Vents Place where the Windows was?

He, indeed the model has changed. The dimensions of the rack on X-turret is still not entirely correct, two crosses should fit between the forward and aft rack. Anyway, it's close. (and, this was a find of Frank Allen of the Hood site)

Those grey areas on the aft searchlight platform are the windows covered by canvas covers. So, add some cover to the windows and paint it painted canvas (I think it was near hull-color). Note that the aft pompom platform has a bulkhead at the rear and at the port side.

I see Thomas also has a blue admirals barge. I'm not sure this is correct, but this is how I am going to model it as well. I like the color.

TY for that great References! My Thoughts are still divided....
I mean this is not a Micro- or Bulleye kinda -Piece. Its a Part of the Superstructure which brings a good Effect and stands for good Research.

maybe its not so amazing it looks like. I discovered a fatal Mistake at the Mainmast just in the Moment.

Because:

I forgot the Lower Gaff. Jesus Chr......
Where i should fly the Ensign Halyard then?

Should be very easy. The gaff is added to the rear of the platform just below the aft star fish. Just take some rod, and you're done. Small errors always happen. You just *don't* want to compare Lion Roar's etched part of the main crane rigging with the actual ship. Half the cables are going to the wrong pulley These things happen. Perhaps I'll post a page with all errors in my own Hood model I don't bother fixing!

TY4 the Information with the Canvas. Ill brush the platform first and add it then.
Bulkheads for aft PomPom is displayed in the Kit. They re both at the Backside. Guess this was for Ammo backup and Shell Disposal.

Absolutely superb work! It looks like you've made a great job of an excellent kit + detail set.

As for why I only posted a reply to this thread today, rather than earlier, I have only just (yesterday) set up a broadband Internet connection on my PC, so I was avoiding most image-heavy threads before then (this thread now takes approx. 10 seconds to load rather than 5-10 minutes...)

One question, what was the frame on X turret for, and was it fitted to Hood in late 1940? I don't think the AotS plans depict this frame (the drawings in this book - at least the early edition I have - are a rather random mix of different "fits")

Note that the AOTS book is relatively old and many nice photographs have resurfaced over the years. There are many errors in the volume. The frame was meant to be a start on an aircraft launched platform which was abandoned. I don't know what it should have looked like and why they never removed the entire frame. (Don't even now when it was fitted but some time before 1940).

The "X" gunhouse frames date back to at least the mid 1930s...the exact date slips my mind right now. I do know however, that we have a number of photos of the ship dating from her time with the Mediterranean Fleet in which the frames can be seen.
