Go with Trumpeter
Evert-Jan is correct (as always).shipmodeler wrote:I'm hesitating between the Commanders' Hood and the Trumpeter kit. The Commanders' kit has its own PE set. The Trumpeter kit has the LionRoar-made set to complement it. Prices aside, which choice is better? Which would give a more detailed or accurate model? Could you guys with your extensive knowledge of these matters advise me? Thank you in advance!
In my opinion, it's really no contest: the 1/350 Trumpeter kit is clearly superior to the old Commander Series Models 1/350 resin Hood kit. Sure, it has a few problems, nonetheless it is still more accurate than the resin kit. Why? Simply because of the resources consulted/research conducted. The Trumpeter kit is based on better and more extensive source material.
Then there are the finances to consider: I seem to recall the resin kit(s) being very expensive (in the neighbourhood of $400 US or so). You could buy the Trumpeter kit as well as some excellent aftermarket detailing parts for much less than the resin kit alone. So, you get a better model for much less. Mo' bang for yo' buck" as the saying goes!

A Modeler Colleague of mine, Markus Fabke
created a nice Kit Review to the Lion Roar PE Set
http://modellbauer.foren-city.de/topic, ... 50004.html
Registration required
and a Review of the Trumpeter Kit as well, apendixed with some useful Books.

Maybe this Review of the Trumpeter Kit is a little more exactly. (Dont worry, Markus

It's all written in german, but the Pis are interesting anyway.
Maybe it its helpful....
The Pricing in CE is about 60 for the TrumpKit and about 100 for the LR PE Frets.

I actually bought the ISW Hood a few months back - I must have been the only one who ever did that, especially since the Trumpeter Hood came out
I have not seen the WEM kit of that time, but I have seen enough pictures of the Trumpeter Hood to recommend it before the ISW kit.
I bought the ISW kit because i read the reviews AFTERWARDS
It's not likely that I will build it. I want the 1931 Hood with the catapult, and that just means too much cutting and sawing.

In 2008 Trumpeter gonna release a 1931 Hood in 1:700. If u can agree with the Scale and some waiting this is maybe better before getting frustrated with the wrong Kit.
Trumpeter Serial Item No. is 5741.
Pitroad also gonna bring one out in 1:700.
Below a Link to HMS Hood Site, comparing WEM and ISW Hood built. But both of them represent later as 1931.

There is no Hood in 1:350 before 1941 i guess.

ISW Hood
Hi Masch 3
You could always consider building a "what if" version of Hood using the Iron Shipwright hull and parts as a starting point. "What if" she had survived the battle with Bismarck and had been reconstructed. That might be an interesting approach- you could do pretty much anything, a slightly modified Hood, a heavily modified Hood (like KGV or Renown) or even a carrier...
Of course, you could still build the kit as it is, but upgrade it with aftermarket parts. Its still possible that you could make it much more accurate with some work.

Hi Gentleman,
i just refit the Main Mast and add the missing Gaff. During the Work some Questions came up.
What do we know about the Gaff was fixed at the Mast? In my References i can see a Gaff Lift and the Ensign Halyard. Was there any more Affixing?
The second Issue i got up there is about the Starfish. The Starfish is fixed at the lower Side with some "Starfish Stays". Do we know if they where fitted as Rig or was they solid? My Opinion would be solid, but maybe we have some more detailed Information.
Further there is something not pretty clear with the white Stripes at the Mast. Was all the three Legs painted with a white Stripe or just the two aftwards?
My last Question would be about the Aft Superstructure.
The Searchlight Platform Bottoms was elaborated in Corticene or in Metal?
Many Questions, aye?
Would be cool if someone could help me out a little.
Thanks in Advance!

I can't see the other side, but did you add the diesel exhaust pipe? I just started working on the main mast so not a lot of detail to show and the picture is as bad as well. It's work in progress... There are also ladders on each leg of the tripod. You can only see one of them now. Note it has a peculiar twist at the end. The other two run up straight, on the 'top' of each leg.

There are also a few more stays holding up the main mast. There are at two going to about 1/3 of the mast.

The updated mainmast looks really good! Nice job indeed. Are you now done with it? If not here is one other detail to consider- the upper mast on Hood (the thin mast at the rear of the starfish) was white. Even the bit that went below the starfish was white.

Re: HMS Hood Trumpeter/Lion Roar 1:350Scale at Slipway
Hi Gentleman,
thanks for the Compliments!
@FW_Allen
Thanks for this important Feedback! Once i thought its done but there are two more Updates to do as far as i know now.
First there must be a additional Gaff-Lift for the upper Gaff. I just forgot to add this one.
Second there is a Protection Sheet at the Dynamo Diesel Exhaust at Deck-Level just as shown on Foet`s Pics
Now there is a Third:
Painting the lower Gaff white.
Do you mean this with "the thin mast at the rear of the starfish"?
I will change that instantly.
Thanks Allen!

PS: Im not quite certain about the Length of the upper Gaff. May its a little shorter. It would not be too difficult to change. References tell different Stories and the Photos i got aint clear enough....

By the way, I haven't seen that upper gaff on any pic of HMS Hood, so I guess you have to take it off

Re: HMS Hood Trumpeter/Lion Roar 1:350Scale at Slipway
Well, I don't see the gaff on any photograh. Note that Thomas Schmidt's is a very good rendering but also based on secondary sources (AOTS Hood and Taylor's book, for example). It's a model, just as the 1:700 kits. Fortunately errors are removed when found, so it's going to be better and better,
