take that back 1/350 is too small i need one that is say 2 foot to 3 foot not sure of what scale that would be maybe 1/125?

You want 1/96 scale then.
Common scales are

1/48 (not common at all really comparatively)
1/96 (common museum and architectural scale, half of 1/48)
1/192 (common museum and architectural scale, half of 1/96)
1/350 Common plastic/resin ship model scale
1/400 somewhat common plastic/resin ship model scale in Europe & Asia
1/600 Older common plastic/resin ship model scale
1/700 Common plastic/resin ship model scale
1/1250 Common metal ship model scale

You will find kits out of these scales from time to time, but most plans are going to be scaled for 1/96 or 1/192... occasionally 1/48th. Aftermarket parts will be most commonly 96th or 192nd.

I had a spur of the moment chance to visit the Joey-P a couple years ago. It was a grey rainy day (great for ex-squids, but poor for disposable camera photos!!!) The short story is that the pictures of all the vent, railing, and locker detail turned out as clear as the bottom of sink with the drain clogged. Your photos have remidied that. Much progress last weekend because of them. Thanks, again!

I'm following your building with the "Gearing", that is a wonderful model. Some of our friends here, Francisco Perez Nanclares, sent me some pics showing closes to a "Gearing" mast, in exibition in Spain. Very soon, I'll be posting here those photos, and hope it can be helpful for you too. I got amazed with the building of the funnels for your "Gearing".... In some "future" I'll be retreating some ex-Uss "Gearings" transferred to Brazilian Navy........"Brinkley Bass" and "Henry W. Tucker".... I think your model will be helping me to build that, so I thank you for sharing too those pics, and keep they coming.... If you have some difficulty with any area for "Gearings" make a try with me asking for images, and tell please what plans you are using....

I have Skywave sumner and Gearing kits I built about a year ago and have now demolished. I am going to convert both into they're 1960s fit as Laffey and Orleck. I am using the Booklet of general plans drawings on the USS Sumner website. I have a couple of questions.

1) The drawings show fixed torpedo tubes behind the forward funnel. Were these fitted in all units, were they removed at some point or did they stay until decomissioning? If they were removed, when?

2) The drawings show the interior of the hangar, which I intend to scratchbuild. Where are any good photos showing the detail?

3) Does anyone make 1/700 photo etched AN/SPS-40 and AN/SPS-10 radar?

The ship is a museum ship in it's GEARING '60's -70's FRAM configuration, moored at Orange Texas. The ship may move to another homeport due to lack of local support and other factors, as reported by the ship's website:

The USS Joseph P. Kennedy DD 850 played a role in a movie......... see the link.....best in a �support� role............ nice to see that undergoing by his own...... The movie is �13 Days�, and during the making, DD 850 was made up with pennant 753 to feature the real John R. Pierce ( Allen Sumner Class, not FRAMed... ), both ships involved in operations during the Cuban Missile Crisis...... great to watch a FRAMed �Gearing� in movement.........the site has photos for the ship.

Your August question about Midships torpedo tubes can be answered factually in Sumrall's definitive book on the Sumners and Gearings.

I think the fixed tubes were used on ships that received the less extensive FRAM II (narrow bridge) conversion, which included the Sumners and some Gearings and may have been for the large 21inch, 24foot long MK-15 (WWII) torpedos. The more extensively modified FRAM I ships (wide bridge) of the Gearing class, like the ORLECK, GEARING, and Joseph P. Kennedy had the smaller, trainable MK-32 mounts for the MK-44or46 torpedos. To complicate matters, some of the FRAM2 ships I believe were later refitted with the smaller MK-32 mounts.

Sorry for the delay about your request for the plans I am using for the USS ORLECK (Fletcher class conversion).

The original Fletcher model was constructed from MaCandliss (SP) plans (4 sheets) in 1/96th scale (included hull lines, outboard profile, plan-view, and details sheet). For the Gearing conversion, I used enlarged outboard-profile and plan-views from the TIN CAN SAILORS press book on the U.S.S. Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. I purchased the book at the musemu when I visited the ship at Fall River, Massachusetts. They have an internet site and do mail order. I also relied on analyzing photos from NAVSOURCE.ORG, and many of the links there to various ship-sites. I think The Floating Drydock has Gearing FRAM plans, too.
