That's very close. I think those are newer versions. The ones I remember on the Barney had smaller optics, literally binoculars. They were kept in a carrying case and we'd mount them to the pedestal for GQ and take them off for storage afterwards.

It's amazing the diversity of equipment you see on ships of the same class. During Barney's last Med Cruise we had something on board that we called The Van. It looked like a small refrigerator trailer without wheels, and it sat on the midships deck aft of the ASROC launcher. It was temporary EW equipment just for the cruise and I've never seen a photo of it on another DDG, and when I ask other Adams class vets about it, no one seems to know what I'm talking about except for those who also served on Barney.

THE VAN YOU ARE REFFERING TO IS PROPABLY THE PREDECESOR OF WHAT IS NOW THE CONTAINER... PROPABLY IT HAD THE SAME USE TO ITS CURENT EQUIVALNET, THAT FOR USING IT TO SIMULATE ELECTROMAGNETIC INTERFERENCE ENVIROMENTS OR RECORD DATA FOR THE SHIP'S OWN TRANSMISIONS... I SAW ONE LAST MARCH WHEN THEY DEPLOYED IT ON A BRITISH FRIGATE.

I just want to remind you all that USS Charles F Adams really needs our help now. She is the final stage of being donated to the ACVA (adams class vets assoc.) for use as a museum in Jacksonville. She really needs to donations to cover the cost of completing the application by MARCH 31st! They are almost a third of the way, but badly need donations so PLEASE contribute whatever you can.

Thank you for your support, it really matters!

I just got an email notification that the Jacksonville City Council voted 15-0 to approve the proposal to bring the USS Adams to their city as a museum.

Hi Guys,
bOTA7.62,
Love to see Joseph Strauss pics!
I spent this past week studying the 1/96 drawings and decided to replace almost all of the foredeck details.
According to BuShips 1/96 DDG-24 drawings, the anchor chain wildcat was almost 1/10 of an inch too far forward on the model.
The two holes in front of the anchor chain wildcat base is where the anchor chain comes up through the deck. These will be covered with whatever you call these elbow shaped hollow covers. The scuttle aft of the wildcat base will be added on, (corrected location with reference to BuShips dwg), with a raised .010 block with an appropriate p/e part atop.

I hope to kick some serious :censored_2: this weekend.

Hi Guys,
The anchor chain wildcat was made using a file, a Dremel tool and a dial caliper. Wildcat dimensions taken from the BuShips 1/96 drawings then reduced using the scale converter on our own SDIPMS website.
http://www.ipmssd.org/
The anchor chain "cover" was a little more difficult, but I did my best to copy the shape and dimensions from drawings and pics.
Image
The center anchor chain bolster was made in the same way as described above.

The anchor chain is 40lpi available from most model train stores.
Lots more to do, Tony

Yep, excellent news, one BIG step forward, but they still have to get their application together and it's looking really good for her.

Very nice work so far Tony, I am always blown away by how clean and crisp your builds are, nevermind the fantastic level of detail. :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1:

Hi Guys,
I got frustrated trying to find pics of the s/s anchor bolster...saved for later nausia, and turned my attention to the yet finished bridge wings. There was some detail beneath the 02 bridge overhang that was removed and replaced, (R AND R in the auto business), and are clearly seen in the pics of DDG-22, but not shown on the BuShip dwgs. These look like rectangular boxes with the lower/outward and down facing side beveled, and are on both sides of the ship with the s/s being longer.
I finished the bridge wings this week; mostly at work. Once again, I used the 1/96 BuShip dwgs and scaled them down to 1/350.

I also started the aft funnel section by removing all of the p/s detail, as it did not match photos.

Hi Guys,
Been a rough couple of weeks; very little modeling done.
Last Tuesday, I gave my father to God.
I'll miss you dad, but you'll be alive inside of me; forever close to my heart. My dad gets the credit for my getting into modeling. I was 5 when I built my first model. Through the years, my dad was there to help me interpret instructions and to assist with too-tough tasks for a kid like me to do.

1/350 DDG project progress pics.
The forecastle detail has been mostly replaced. The toughest part was the stbd side anchor bolster; as it had 6 faces and I had no good pics of all the sides.
Here is the best shot of DDG-22's anchor bolster detail that I could find...no anchor in the way.
Image

Here is the finished stbd side anchor bolster........stbd side view

port side......
Image

The bridge face now has the windows wiped away, as there were 6 fwd facing windows molded in place, and on the real ships, there were only 5! I had to wipe away the side windows too; to match whatever I plan to do to replace them.........don't know yet.
Image

I'll have to keep moving forward... :thumbs_up_1:

Hi Guys,
Thanks Tim.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I spent some time making changes to the aft superstructure, as DDG-22 pics differed somewhat from the WEM kit. The changes were simple enough:
Remove some details and add some details. I used drawings and photos to concur before changes were made.
Image

Image

This is an ongoing effort to make this project as close in accuracy to DDG-22 from 1972 as is possible; or I should say as I am able.
Clearly, the WEM folks who/m produced this kit and named it the DDG-22 Benjamin Stoddert did not have enough resources or they'd have made it more accurate. In this same statement, I must also confess that I'm greatful to WEM for producing this kit; otherwise I'd not get to build an Adams Class DDG in 1/350. I can scratch build simple replacement piece-parts, but not an entire kit!
Thanks for letting me share, Tony

Tony,

Nice work! That aft deckhouse on the Barney was my home during my time aboard. Missile radar was directly beneath the two SPG illuminators.

Hi Guys,
I posted this on SN on the heels of a rash of 1/96 pic posts...
Here's my daughter Sydney with my 1/96 DDG as it looks today, and will look till I get teh 1/350 DDG finished. The good news; this model runs sweet!
Image

On the 1/350 front, I've been obsessing on the 5"54 Mk42 single mounts.
They won't look anything like they did out of the box.
I think I've gone ooooooooover---------board!!!
Take care DDG fans, Tony
