Re: Calling all USS Sumner/Gearing class (DD) fans
Jimmy,
Thanks for the kind words. I'm getting better as I go along.
What do you mean by "Will like to see pennant number!!"?
Do you mean putting the radio call sign signal flags on the model?
I just received some 1/700 signal flag decals in the mail from Pacific Front Hobbies. They are "MicroScale" brand decals. The signal flags look just a little too, big however. I'd need to put on an even larger ensign flag to make them look right. We'll just have to try and see.

You are welcome.
I was referring about pennant number painted in the hull, not the call S flags... I love to see the numeral 7 painted in models!
See the pic..........

Yes, you are correct.... see the funnel cap in the photo...... and the veteran served on her!!!! ( USS "Harry E. Hubbard": She's so beautiful in the photos!!! ( Use female gender for ships!!!) )NukeMM wrote:I'm working on a 1/700 Skywave/Pit-Road Sumner kit conversion into the USS Harry E. Hubbad DD-748 for a veteran who served on her (him?) from 1962 to 1966.
I used the bridge section of the Gearing kit and JAG's PE from their FRAM II kit for the mast. I was going to change the stacks to the later tapered funnel version, as shown in an art print that the veteran had, but I think that that artist's rendition was incorrect. I have seen no photos of the HEH with the tapered funnels, at all, for any time period, so I'm going to stick with the original stack design.

NukeMM:
In the period 1962 to 1966 Sumner class were using LARGE hull numbers............ not the old little style......
I was examining the proportions of the antenna and director mk 37 and seems to me that the antenna in your model is a bit bigger than should. I took some measures of those parts and post a drawing......... if the image tells and you can understand!
Measuring some plans for the mk 37 director I could notice a proportion of 77/120, or 25/31 between the diameter of the antenna and the height of the director ........
This is just an opinion in order to improve your model!
Nice regards: Jimmy

Hello,
Im currently starting an research on a korean war diorama. I wanted to present USS Bon Homme Richard (CV31) in Korean Waters in August 1952 timeframe. Guys, do you know which Sumner Class destroyers were deployed to TF77 at that time and could have been with CV31? I would like to build one of these destroyers while proceeding an UNREP with CV31. Do you have any reference material about this? Thank you very much in advance!
Cheers,
Torben

Torben,
There are clues about CTF-77 on this link. It is a lead for you and not necessarily an answer to your question.

Jimmy,
Thanks for your calibrated eye! It must come in pretty handy. Most of modifications have been by eye and not actual measurements.
The Mk37 dish came with the kit. But maybe I have the wrong dish mounted on it. I'll double check. I have a lot of 1/700 part sprues that I am using, back and forth.
Thanks for the pointing out the light mount in the middle of the mast. I hadn't noticed one in photos of the Hubbard on NavSource.org.
I will post photos of my completed model after it is in the hands of the Hubbard veteran.

USS Soley is cited as have being with USS BHR in Korea, 1952.read the following..
<<<<<Soley ( USS SOLEY DD 707 ), along with other ships of DESRON 2 (USS John R. Pierce and USS Barton), steamed North to the Korean war zone and from June 22 to July 1, 1952, operated in the antisubmarine screen with the carriers of Task Force 77 ( TF 77 ) conducting raids against North Korean hydroelectric power stations on the Yalu River. Attack planes from the carriers Boxer, Bon Homme Richard ( CV 31 ), Princeton, and Philippine Sea took part in these massive raids along with aircraft of the Air Force......>>>>

The same to USS Harry E. Hubard, in the following site:

These 2 ships are "Allen Sumner class, both the only I could find in some research, as you specified. Maybe more info to come.

Nice to me to give a little help, sorry to point some mistake, but you know your model pleases me at all. I put some link to "Allen Sumner" plans that may be of some use, even if in a different configuration.
What about scratchbuilding a new antenna if you don't find a new one in the right scale?
Keep the photos coming!!!

In 15 May 1952, 08:00h USS Strong DD 758 departed Norfolk , US, together with USS "John R. Pierce" DD 753 ( flagship of ComDesRon 2 ) , USS "Soley" DD 707 and USS "Barton" DD 722 , directing for the war zone in Korea, going via the Panama Canal, arriving in Japan in 18 June 1952.
In 20 June, arrived in the Naval Base of Sasebo of where it left in 22 after replenishing together with the other units of DesRon 2. In 23 June entered in waters of Korea joining task Force 77. From 24 June, the FT-77 started to carry through the first sea and air attacks against the hydroeletric power plant of the River Yalu, between them the Suiho that at the time was the fourth greater of the world generating around 400.000 Kw. The hydroeletric of Suiho, was only 56 km distant of the border with China and the complex of air bases of Antung, in the Manchury, where hundreds of Mig's were based.
In the occasion the FT-77 was composed by aircraft carriers USS Bon Homme Richard, USS Phillipine Sea, USS Princeton and USS Boxer.
1952 FT 77 -aircraft carriers USS Bon Homme Richard, USS Phillipine Sea, USS Princeton and USS Boxer.
The attack was launched at 14:00 h and was the biggest until then was carried through in the War of Korea.
In the following day the capacity of generation of energy of the North Korea was seriously reduced, the Pyongyang capital was without energy power and all manufactures of both sides of the river Yalu were paralyzed. Miraculously, no aircraft was lost.
What I dont if USS Strong ( "Allen Sumner" class ) did ever take replenishment at sea ( UNREP ) with USS BHR in Korean waters, year 1952.

USS Barton DD 722
On 15 May 1952 USS Barton departed Norfolk via the Panama Canal for Korea, arriving at Yokosuka, Japan 18 June. She Joined Task Force 77 ( as aircraft carrier group mentioned before... ) as a member of a hunter-killer group for operations along the east coast of Korea, that means with other destroyers. On 10 August 1952 while silencing enemy batteries on the island of Hodo Pando, Barton was hit on her number one stack by a 105 mm. shell from an enemy shore battery. Two men were wounded. After a short repair period at Yokosuka (25-31 August) she returned to Korean waters.
While operating with Task Force 77 , she was struck by a floating mine 16 September 1952 and had five men missing and seven wounded.
As extracted, with additions from:

Jimmy,
I guess that the dish antenna did not come with the kit, but from a Skywave/Pit-Road Equipment Set. It is the smallest dish that I have. I have a smaller one from a spare JAG resin sprue, but it is too, fragile to clean up and install. I'm going to live with the radar dish that is on it. The veteran won't tell the difference, but I'll keep this in mind for next time.
A fellow shipmate of the veteran of the Hubbard just now provided these two photos of the Harry E. Hubbard. They would have been really nice to have had when I started the modification of the model. I think that I have gotten it pretty close for this small scale. I do notice that the tripod mast on my model doesn't extend down to the O2 deck. The photo-etched tripod mast that I used was from JAG's Sumner FRAM II and I don't see how it could have extended down to the O2 deck from the O3 deck. Unless, I should have attached the aft stanchions of the tripod to plastic rod and extended it further down. Maybe that's how it was supposed to be done, even on the JAG model. I wish that I would have realized that before now.
Here is a glimpse of my Hubbard's mast.

NukeMM,
your model is very nice, the photos are great.
I hope the veteran will be very glad with the model and the job you made.
I like very much the way you put the model, just as a little diorama, even with a blue sky!!!!
I made some BW version for this photo, to take back the ship to the 50"s!!
See as follow!
Nice regards: Jimmy
