Resently seen at the Ascot race
course near London. The venue for the
100th Model Engineering Exhibition.
This 1:96 scale model of the projected battle cruiser
HMS Anson from the "G3" design was built by
non other than Alex McFadian and once again earned
Alex a converted Gold medal.
The detail is quite outstanding considering that it was
built as a fully working model and not as static.
Even the main 16inch guns can fire rounds. Just take a
look at the detail atop of the turret roof it's mind blowing.

Wow, what a great build. Interesting looking ship too - would have been interesting to see what type of careers they would have had if completed.

That's one handsome looking battleship there, it kind of reminds me of Rodney or Nelson maybe is because the bridge superstructure. Thanks for the pics Dave.

Truely wonderful, with some outstanding detail, he must have got the 'as fitteds' from the NMM?

Do you have any idea why he chose the name Anson?

According to the information with the model the model builder ascribed the name "Anson" which of course is not official `The builder condidered a name more appropriate than "G3 design" he also conjectured the names of the three ships to have been Howe, Anson and Rodney. Who knows he may have been right. The drawings are official and very comprehensive . Now that means some modeller may well wish to have a go and build say a "H" class battleship or the British "L3" 18 inch gunned battleship design and not forgetting the South Dakota class battleships BB49 -54 . Now that class would be a real challenge?

The build quality and attention to detail is stunning. But with regards to the proposed class, we have:

Handsome = 2
Interesting = 2
Very mean looking = 1

No-one's said:

Objectionable, Ugly or Disgusting!

She's awful. Worse, even, than the Nelson and Rodney. I'm glad it was never built.

I'm with Andy G. I think Nelson/Rodney are ugly and this looks like Nelson/Rodney towing a trailer...

With that said, it is a well built model...

I think it looks majestic, powerful and unique as did Rodney and Nelson.

Ok they don't have the handsome lines of the proceeding Admiral class (Hood), but they gave a tremendous sense of size and power just like Japanese Battleships with their Pagoda's

I agree, they are pretty handsome ships to me. And imagine how all that open area could have been used to add heavy and light AA in lieu of the 6" and single 4.7": dual 4.5" turrets galore, pom-poms or quad Bofors, tubfulls of 20mm, and radar! Oh, mouth-watering... :surfer:

In my opinion, one of the best aspects regarding the Washington Naval Disarmament Treaty is such awfully ugly ships were never built.

Nevertheless, I think Mr. MacFadyen has created a modeling masterpiece that rivals his earlier HMS Vanguard. And it's a working model!!!! Does ship modeling get any better than this? I think not.

Ok, so throw something at me, but I think these are actually much more beautiful than Nelson or Rodney.

Somehow they capture the adventurous, future-orientated spirit of the 1920s much more like any other ship I know - as if they are out of a Fritz Lang movie... :big_grin:
