Look for info on U-boat UD-1 ( Projekt 50 )

Greetings,

Does anybody have any info on this never built U-Kruezer? I have seen the plans on the Dreadnought Project site and was wondering if any technical info on the design has survived? A 25-knot, steam powered sub is cool.

I have also seen one pic of a model of the sub that someone in Germany built ( it might have been Lothar Wischmeyer ). Does anybody have more pics of this model? The scanned plan is very detailed, but not quite enough to build a really good model unless you know a lot about WW1 U-boats... which I don't. It seems very similar in appearance to the U-139 U-Kreuzer, but I can't find plans for it either.

On a similar note, and source of info or plans for the British K-class steam subs?

The British had many 25-knot steam subs and they were definitely not "cool". They were hot deathtraps.

What do the numbers across the top stand for? I can guess a few of them, like surfaced and submerged displacement, length and speed. But I'm not sure what all of them are.

5- displacement surfaced and submerged, 6-lenght, 7-beam, external hull and internal (resistant) hull, 9-power turbines (surfaced) and electrical (submerged), 11-max speed, surfaced and submerged.

For the UD-1 (project 50) German Steam driven U-Cruiser design you will want to get a copy of "The U-Boat, The evolution and technical history of German submarines" by Eberhard R�ssler. US Naval Institute Press 1989 , translated and printed in the US.
Used book search should turn one up.

I am looking at the discription of the project on page 75. Included is a layout drawing of the Turbines and boilers. 4 boilers built into the sides with the steam turbines in central compartments.

Work started in Feb 1918 when "War contract AA" was awared to KW Kiel for a U Cruiser of this type. In May work started in the mould-loft and work shops in great secrecy. But the keel was not layed down yet at the end of the war.

propulsion surfaced 4: 6,000 hp steam turbines, 2 450 hp diesel generators

The hull was developed in accordance with Project 46a, but a greater length was envisaged [125m].
