This is a how to do question.

I came across a couple of photographs of the steam sub K-13 on the bottom of the Gareloch, where it sank in 55 feet of water. Basically the story was that 48 guys were trapped in the forward section (everyone aft of the control room died) and were running out of air. The salvage crews managed to connect an HP lead to the horn blower (I think) and with the air the crew blew the forward ballast tanks, standing the sub on its stern. Then a hole was cut in the bow and they were pulled out. There was a neat diagram showing this from a side view, stern buried in bottom mud, bow and scopes sticking out of water, salvage ships gathered round.

This is my diorama. I've got a K boat from Combat Subs and although the swan bow needs modifying, its what I need. But the water. I want a side view showing boat under water, boat sticking out of water, salvage boats on top of water. Anyone any ideas? I thought of clear resin, but how will I stop those air bubbles collecting around the screws, in the casing, etc. Ideally it should be darker as it goes deeper as well.

I'm at the idea collecting stage at the moment, so any ideas?

Basically, a blue-tinted acrylic box with the top of it done with your desired choice of water-making material.

At the SLC, Utah Model show I ran across a great diorama built along the lines of the above link.

The builder started out with a Wooded base with groves for a clear pexiglass 4 sided case like an aquarium.

Sand bottom with half a rusted hull of a submarine with divers, coral reefs plants and even a sharkswimming around the wreck on The Bottom.

About 2/3 rd the way up the clear pexiglass he had lined the inside (back and 2 side walls with a light blue semi transparent sheet. You might even find motled or marbled pexiglass with a couple shades of blue and maybe a little white.

Then he cut a piece of Blue for the surface water, cut an opening for the surface ship so you could see the hull under the surface (I forget if there were waves and what not).

You could do something similar just cut a second hole for the bow of the sub to raise up through and suspend the bow section from the surface.

Wish I would have taken my camera, super diorama. Appeared to be 1/72 scale I think.
