A Fubuki DesDiv: Ushio, Ayanami, Inazuma & Fubuki

WIth my leaving for the NATS tomorrow AM, it is obvious that none of the PitRoad Fubukis that I have been building (over a year) will make it. I had hopes for the test build ship Inazuma, but even though she's painted, she's not rigged and assembled. So, I'll just post these pics and add as I go.

Three ships are pictured, Ushio 1944, Ayanami 1942, & Inazuma 1942. The PitRoad kits are improvement over the Tamiyas, but there's much more correcting to be done then first realized.

Was there a time when Ushio or another one of the Fubukis had 2 equal sized funnels?

All of the Type Is and Type IIs (20 ships) had equal size funnels. You can sort of see it in the first pic, two ships to the left.

The four Type IIIs (Akatsuki, Ikazuchi, Inazuma & Hibiki) had the thinner fore funnel. These ships had an improved boiler system & layout, so the forefunnel only ran off of the #1 boiler, as opposed to 2 boilers in the earlier ships.

Well, I want to finish these, then I've planned to work on two of the new IJN oil tankers from Fujimi and then, possibly, the new Furutaka kit. It looks like a great kit.

What are the things around the funnels - shaped like lift rafts - for?

At the rate I'm going, I can't be too sure of that. But, thx for the kudos.

Not sure which things you are referring to. If you mean the horizontal rectangular brass PE, those are torpedo reload hatchs, similar to these seen aboard the wreck of the Mutsuki class Kikuzuki. I'm not spending $25+ for PitRoad Fubuki PE when this latticework will work almost as well.

congratulations for your very impressive work It will certainly be a main reference for my IJN DD.

In particular, i like very much the different canvas. What material do you use for making the canvas on railings ? thin cigarette paper or white glue ?

Thank you, Gilbert. Believe or not, I use Tamiya paint, tinted to approximate the canvas color (will have to go darker for late war). It turns out that, if left unthinned and allowed to stand for about 30-60 seconds, the paint has the right viscosity to adhere to & between the railings without shriveling up too much. You have to put it on thicker than normal, and it works best with a brush whose tip is straight across, for maximum area (like a housepaint brush).

I don't think it could work with 1/350, but it works fine in 1/700
