It is DMLs Phillipine Sea Kit, which disappointed me because it did not come with all those Radomes the old Mobile Bay kit came with :heh: !

All Right! Something new, and a Tico at that! My Skywave USS Merrill was a fun build.

I look forward to more progress photos!

There is a solution to your problem ASFC. The Jag Radome set. I have the DML radomes but i didn t use them because they look too small. They looked though o.k. for the new smaller radomes used on the 2 BMD Ticos CG-67 and CG-70.

Here are a couple of photos of my CG-70 showing the radomes.

You know, it might be interesting to see somebody building one of the Flight II Ticonderogas, the ones I recall reading are due for the new 5"/64 guns as well as other refinements.

I have built my own improved Ticonderogas but after much thought i only added Ram launchers in place of the CIWS because i considered that 5"/62 MK-45 were better on a ship used for fire support duties such as improved Spruances. Anyway
i think that Spruance class is a better candidate for a what-if project since Ticos are very well armed and are capable in most tasks in naval warfare.

This was actually not a What If, I recall reading it somewhere that the Flight II Ticonderogas were/are planned to have the 62 caliber gun on the mounting. Call me crazy, but that's what I read. It'd make an interesting project to say the least, and would make a slightly modified look, as would the addition of RAM units.

Hopefully Missouri and her RAM launchers will be arriving soon, I'm looking forward to that, but in the mean time, I hit another What If in my stash and plans, starting work on that the last couple of days, it's not USN, not Postwar, so I won't post it here, but to my own thread.

You re absolutely right Sauragnmon. There was a plan to modernise the remaining 22 Ticonderogas but this has been cancelled (i think). They would be upgraded with the new guns and Searam not RAM. :wave_1:

I Knew I wasn't crazy, at least with respects to that! And it's only been cancelled tenatively, there might be plans to modernize put into play again, since Obama was talking that word modernization in his promises - but he's a politician, he probably means to make cutbacks. That's Modernizing in Politspeak.

I think that RAM was not intended to be installed on warships with Aegis since these would use ESSM as a point defence missile. When i heard that it was intended to add Searam to Ticonderogas i guessed that this happened due to the importance of the Ticos since they are the most potent AAW ships in the U.S. Navy. Since the modernisation program had been conceived many things have changed. Probably phallanx is considered more important and multirole since it can engage small surface targets a very important threat since 9/11.

No its alright, i'm building her as built anyway, that way I don't have to eplace the Ships boats with RHIBs (after some quick research I found that Big Radomes=RHIBS instead of boats) And i have plenty of the smaller Radomes to give her what she needs!

As built means no radomes at all.

You guys are nuts. Everytime I come here after a few months at sea, I see this big difference in quality of all your models and of course a few other guys starting and improving too. Incredible, this topic has been a lesson to a lot of people and an impressive show of skills of all of you!!!! Keep it going, great to follow this one :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1:

Notice there are some that don't come with the kit which I have in the spares box (like that one aft of the main mast).

ASFC this is an inmarsat antenna aft of the mainmast and i think this is not a photo of the ship as commissioned.

Anyway i m looking forward to seeing in progress photos of your Tico. :wave_1: :wave_1: :wave_1:

Carl,
i swear when i first saw this one while scrolling down i asked myself why you put a photo of the real ship since you completed it.

Image

After observing it for a while i realised it is a photo of your model.

Now go to that contest and win first prize.

I can hardly wait to see your next build. :wave_1: :wave_1: :wave_1:

Thank you Simon, Nektarios, and Hippy!

I'm very proud of it. I think its my "Model of the Year" even if those treadheads and airdales in the club just think it is "Squid Stuff".

How are these for looking real, Nektarios?

Grats on finishing that beastie - take it to next year's nats and show the world what a *real* ship is supposed to look like... :)

I spent yesterday's modelling hour splitting off the lower hull from my Dragon Ticonderoga (actually it says Normandy on the box, but it's still a Tico...). Luckily it came off easy enough once I made it through the seam in one place, and the upper hull rests flat on the table with no warpage or missing bits. Yay me, now all my 1/700s are waterline models. I don't think I'll remove the lower hull on my Reagan, though - the bulbous bow is one of the major differences between her and the rest of the class, and besides, she's 1/720, and the only other 720 I've got is full-hull only. (it remains to be seen whether I'll finish that beastie, though - it's the very old LHA from Revell, with the huge masts and all. Ugh.)

Other than that, building has been slooooow, since I've been suffering from a caffeine-abstinence-induced headache for a couple of days. Going cold turkey on Cola is not working out for me... :-(
