WOW, a lovely build!

I apologize if you already mentioned this, but did she really have the sun ray design or did you just come up with that for fun?

I don't blame you for thinking it was a joke .......but the real ship was actually painted that way for a few months in the late 1960's. It was the first time a decorative scheme was applied to the side of a ship's hull. The design did not go down well. It is reported the Italians hated it ....... they considered it the "evil eye"....

I think the "eyes" were those of the actress Jean Harlow.

This is a picture of the real ship.

Oh no, I didn't think it was a joke - I had just never seen a picture of it so I wasn't sure.

Now that you mention it, the eyes do look a bit hostile... and familiar.

Great model! I can imagine shaping that counter stern was a pain in the rear. Sad to see 'Indy' recently towed out of San Francisco. Question - where did you get the plans from? I have been hunting for a set of plans for 'Connie' or 'Indi', ideally as originally built (but I'll settle for the later incarnation).

I get most of my plans from the ebay shop PLANS N THINGS.

The plans I bought for the Indy show her in her original form. I had to amend the plans to get her later shape.

And yes, the counter was murder!

Great looking ship. I think the Sun burst design makes the model. Fantastic job

Patrick,

Is this the same ship?

My father took these two 35mm slide photos of an S.S. Independence in Genoa, Italy in late 1952 while he was in the USN on a cruise on the USS Duxbury Bay AVP-38, flagship for ComMidEastFor.

Great to see the magnificent Patrick Camilleri here! Very nice and clean build! Great to see some non-military ships here too.

[quote="NukeMM"]Patrick,

Is this the same ship?

Yes, Indy was launched in 1950 so she was a relatively new ship when your father took those photos. In fact she appears in her original livery.

Haven't worked on the Indy model for some months. My eldest daughter was married at the end of June so I had other things to keep me busy. Went back to the Indy and ....disaster ..... I found the hull cracked in 5 or 6 places. Could be the summer heat got to it. 36+ temperatures aren't very kind to plastic.

I think I'll consider vac-forming the hull next time I build a ship with these complicated curvatures.

The damage meant re-gluing, refilling and re-spraying the hull. I painted the boot topping today .... so it will soon be back as it was.

A quarter of the run rays were removed during this operation and now have to be re-applied.

The worst thing is that the freshly airbrushed white is so much whiter than the rest of the model where the white has aged. It will be a few months before the freshly painted areas match with the ones painted earlier. Luckily the sunrays break up the hull and it is not easy to notice the difference.

The pictures show the model during the repair process.

The Idependence is finally complete! This is a picture of the real ship compared to a picture of the model.

I've sent a number of pictures to Tim and I imagine they will appear in the gallery in due course.

Saw your pics arrive in our gallery email. Sean will most likely get to them first (as he usually does). But WOW, what a cool paint job you have accomplished. :thumbs_up_1:

Great build, I admire your entire collection!!!! :thumbs_up_1:
Must indeed have been a real nightmare to do this one. That VLCC you made is also very awesome, hope to become half as good as you some day!

Pieter,

Can't decide between the Conte di Savoia, Normandie or Raffaello. At the moment I reckon I will go for Normandie, however, to avoid the poblems I had with cracking of the hull in my last build I think I will set up the basic hull and wait a couple of months for it to dry out completely............while I'm waiting I'll build the Airfix QM2. Can't say I like the look of that ship ....but I suppose I do need to add a modern barge to my collection ;)
