It's actually pretty funny, you know why?
You're like the super advanced version of me, haha. I actually wanted to work with the Tamiya, as best as I could, to really learn and develop the skills. Because I was not that experienced at first and I wanted absolutely to enter the hobby through a ship that I really loved, I pick the 1/350 Yamato and Musashi sisters for the interest, and let me say, so far so good. I've made some mistakes but definately learned from them.
The ultimate prize for me, however, is that 1/200 Nichimo set!

(Or anything of that scale, should any manufacturer come up with a new set.)
It is just outside of my financial range at the moment, as I've already spent quite some money on the Yamato sets, and I'm interesting in getting other smaller sets of other ships and things, so the Nichimo thing would wait for me... Heh, though I noticed it is getting harder to get your hands on it.
I may be able to get my hands on a 1/250 Doyusha kit from my local store at an affordable price, BUT, the thing is, they're out of stock, and I'm really not sure if they'll manage to get it in for me. Not sure if you've dealt with that kit, heh.
As far as deck colors, I'm attempting my best to go for historical accuracy - just for that sake. Like you, I'd like to stay as realistic as possible to really represent the ships' spirits as well as their crew's on their final battle.
Though my skills are still lacking, especially, for instance, in rigging. lol It's impossible for me!
I seriously thought about the idea of trying to photo-etch my Yamato, but the PE cost way too much for me at this point. With the cost, I'd rather build an all new Yamato. lol
