Thanks for the kind words, Vlad. Just one thing, you can be be very proud for the outstanding work you have done in your website and, for myself, as an IJN fan in general and A Yamato "nuts" in particular, it is just a great time to browse all the information you have gathered there.

Regarding rusting and weathering - Vlad, do you have the KMM book on the Yamato class, with the 3 pages of enlargements of the photo in question? Her hull is clearly stained and weathered. It is even more noticeable when compared to the pics of her on trials. Remember, she basically sat at anchor at Truk for 8+ months under a hot sun and humid climate. Rust is inevitable.

She may be a flagship, but she was a working warship, not a museum piece. FWIW.

Thanks Dan! Do you have a link for the book as I do not have that one and would like to purchase it. I completely understand that such weathering probably occured at Truk and Borneo. But (and I believe I am recalling this from Spurr's book, she was painted when she was at Kure. So at the time of Ten-Go she was most likely in fine attire - for her funeral.

Hello all
I have no doubt that you know more than I do about the Yamato.

My question is, what makes you think -apart from the drawings, or photos of the faded Hinoki from the Mikasa by the Japanese site (Watakan), that the yamato deck was light grey (or Tan for that matter?). Looking at this picture here (from Bucketfoot-al site), it seems to me that the deck colour was darker than the deck or the hull.

Just a doubt

Joao - you can't link the BIG image because Tripod won't allow it. You need to link the MEDIUM image that has text under it. Then we can go and look at the big photo. As it is, even I have no idea what image you are trying to link to..... :wave_1:

OK. I am assuming you are probably looking at this photo:

http://ultimatebattleshipyamatosite.tri ... 5?i=80&s=1

The deck is clearly light in color, regardless whether it looks darker than the battleship. In any event the IJN battleship or Kure Gray that the Yamato was painted with is fairly light.

But having taken a closer look at the photo because of your comment, I now lean towards the theory that the deck was wood-colored. Light wood colored, of course. It was not gonna be light tan, but it was light compared to what it looked like 6 months earlier at Leyte Gulf....

Compare the above photo with this one, taken during Leyte Gulf, which clearly shows a MUCH darker deck color than does the above photo from Ten'ichigo:

Vlad, the KMM (Kure Maritime Museum books, published by Diamond-Sha) are large format, ultra clear photo books on the IJN. The series was published in conjunction with the opening of that same museum a few years ago, with photos selected from the Shizuo Fukui collection. I cannot recommend these enough.

Available from several sources, among others:

Pacific Front Hobbies
Hobby Link Japan - http://www.hlj.com/hljlist2/?Maker1=DIA ... =Nav&Dis=2
Amazon Japan
Kunikuniya Bookstore chain.

I just received my 1/200 Yamato with GMM photo etch, bith sheets, and I have Skulski's book. I can't wait to dive into the beast!

hey im right now building the 1/350 yamato and im trying to get it the most accurate as possible
ive already bought PE from lionroar, GMM,eduard and even veteran 25mm AA 5in (i think) AA binoculars
and 2 wooden decks (i decided to buy the newer one with no holes after some heavy consideration cuz i wasnt really happy with the holed one i bought)

just question: i want to buy evergreen sheets to make the superstructure and the bottom of the rear of the bridge where the catwalk is... tamiya has theirs too narrow... what size and thickness should i get?

I cut away the sides of Tamiya's superstructure to modify the kit to 1941 configuration. I used 1mm sheets to build up a series of "transverse bulkheads" to define the shape of the superstructure sides, and used 0.5mm sheets as skin for the new superstructure sides. As skin 0.3mm was too soft and thin, and developed creases over the "transverse forming bulkheads" where it curved around the front and back of superstructure. 1.0 mm was too thick and stiff, and could not be sanded to fair smoothly into the remaining parts of Tamiya's original superstructure sides. 0.5mm was just right.

And yes, Tamiya got the side of the superstructure pretty wrong even for 1944/45. I don't believe the base of the part of superstructure molded into the hull was too narrow. But the tops was far too wide, thus giving the superstructure sides far less tumble home than it actually possessed.

Chuck,
What're you using for reference material? We would like to see your WIP pics if possible.
Thanks

For the contour of the superstructure sides, I used ATOS Yamato. It is the only source I have which showed a reasonably extensive series of lower superstructure cross sections. I didn't take any WIP photos of the superstructure conversion. I will take some picture of the finished product and post them.
