Those are flood vents. Nautilus Models has a template set for them on this page.

I realized I forgot to post this in here, US Navy Instructions for Camouflage Measure 32, patterns 3SS-b and 9SS.

Re: Calling all USS Gato class (SS) fans
I've been looking over the link you posted Tracy, but I don't understand how these are to actually look like on the real sub. Do the Nautilus Templates come with full instructions for challenged people like me?
Reason I ask is the templates look like holes that are way to big but I probably an not paying attention to scale.
Iron Bottom Sound provides templates with there resin kits, are these just limber holes or do they include bottom hole locations too?
TIA,
Jeff

Re: Calling all USS Gato class (SS) fans
You'd be better off asking James from Nautilus or Mario from IBS directly in regards to instructions; I've got the 72nd Gato but it's lower on my list of things to do so I haven't picked up any of the templates yet. These holes weren't small; for a crash dive you do want rapid flooding!

Does anyone have a photo of the USS Barb with the multiple 5' rocket launcher on board in 1945?

Did Revell short change us on decals?
Am I overlooking something here, or does Revell not supply enough decals to repeat the same number on both sides of the 1/72 Gato's conning tower? There's plenty for the hull numbers. I guess I'll have to paint her in full wartime patrol (the ditched the numbers during hostilities, correct?)

Check out the photos of Gato at Mare Island during the war. Even that far from the front lines she had no numbers on the conning tower.

What about the small numbers on the bow, would those still be there?

I'm not going to say never, but you don't see them in the photos coming out of Mare Island refits with fresh paint otherwise.

Re: Calling all USS Gato class (SS) fans
At first I did not buy the Revell's Gato 1:72 because I have no space to keep it, I opted for Trumpeter's Gato 1:144 instead. But when a fellow modeler offered to sell a built Gato 1:72 for just $19 I just couldn't resist buying. He also offered a built typeVIIC 1:72 for just $16 and though I have one already I bought another - thinking of converting it to type VIIC/41.

Re: Calling all USS Gato class (SS) fans
Hope I didn't miss this, I just read through the pages in this thread, but anyway does anyone have any experience with the PE offered by WEM and Nautilus for the Trumpy 1:144 Gato model? Any read differences between the two?
Thanks

Always open. This was before a lot of work was done for noise reduction.

Tracy,
How about mesh covers for ventral ports? I know they weren't used during the was as not to interfere with the water flow for more rapid submergences but were they are prior to the war on earlier boats?

Carr,
Go to navsource.org and check the photos on the Manitowac Gatos, starting with USS Peto. There are some photos there. Manitowac built there boats literally upside to aid in welding, so you're actually looking at the bottom of the hulls. The shape of the flood holes is quite visible.

Subs aren't the only vessels launched like that; try a YouTube search for "side Launch" some time.
