Definately some excellent work, there!

I noticed the very fine wood grain in it - balsa for the majority of the construction so far? I'd imagine it's much more resilient than styrene would be for such scale work.

Dear Sauragnmon, my Amagi is built entirely from scrap styrene card; mostly 3mm card for strength & stability in the hull......

Dear Dan. K, Gernot & J. Soca, thank you for your kind words......

The model has been in this condition for about 11 years I think. I keep wondering if I should finish it; scratchbuilding the turrets is now a deterrent......

Perhaps you can scratch build one turret and then cast it in resin to duplicate it 5 times.

Or alternetly, if you look around I'm sure you could get plans or schematics or something for the Pre-refit turrets (if you want to do her as finished) and talk to Admiralty Modelworks to get them done in resin. You can get metal barrels as well, I'm not sure if the 14cm guns are out in 350, but the If I recall, BMK does the 406mm guns, as he adapted them for a design I've commissioned him to do.

Dear Sauragnmon & Chuck, thank you for the suggestions. I'm quite capable of scratchbuilding a turret (I used to be a professional modelmaker) but I just cannot face the thought of it right now. I also own part of a modelmaking business http://www.f-rsin.com but somehow I don't think I can justify the cost of tooling up and moulding the necessary parts, well not to my business partners......

I was looking for a cheap/easy/lazy way to finish the Amagi model......

How to market the resin turrets to your partners... well, I'm sure there'd be a modelmaker or two who might find a little enjoyment in having Pre-refit turrets for, say, their Nagato models... maybe somebody out there might want to do an as-built early-life swept-stack Nagato with the new Hasegawa kit. If you market it to a few people, or at least maybe to a few shops, you could turn out a few batches, sell them to some of the online dealers, who knows what goes.

Dear Moderators, should I have posted the pictures of my Amagi model in the scratchbuilding forum instead?

If you plan on making frequent updates with pictures, it would be best to post it in a new thread in scratchbuilding or picture posts's Work in Progress. You can also post the link to your build thread in this thread.

This is great thread, and Terry's model is something should be casted at the present state, just to let others try... Personally I would really like to attempt a transformation of the Akagi 1/350 kit (I know, it is not strictly a Kaga) into its original BC appearance. Until know, anyway, I was not able to find any source for the original layout for the bridge level built around the heptapodal mast. Given the detailed discussion about the turrets, and the half built model, could anyone suggest a source for these schema/plans? Thanks!

I'll look in the Ishibashi BB book when I get a chance. Might have some good detail there.

Its 13 or 14 years ago since I built the pagoda heptapod mast (and the rest of the model). In the absence of proper plans I had to deduce and "guess" using the drawings from Siegfried Breyer; Jentschura, Jung & Mickel and Model Boats magazine......

I made my own drawing, originally to 1/450 to match the Hasegawa Akagi aircraft carrier kit, and then I scaled up to 1/350 before I started construction. Jim Baumann has much better photographs of this model than I have......

Jim?

THe Ishibishi book really has a nice die view line drawing, but nothing better than what's really out there. The superstructure for the Amagis and the Tosas look very similar at a glance. FWIW.
