Does anyone know which PT Boats were used by the Royal Navy, and where? I'm mostly interested in the 77 foot, as I have four spare Pit Road ones

I hope that some of you PT Boat experts and historians can help me out with this.

I am still having trouble finding which MTB RONs were attached to the USS Oyster Bay AGP-6 in October to December 1944 during the Philippines invasion.

From a listing of 13 MTB “Sections” that were formed for the Leyte Gulf invasion I have narrowed the RONs down to 8?, 12, 21, 33, and 36. I think that 33 was attached to the USS Portunus AGP-4 at this time. So, 12, 21, or 33 are the candidates for the USS Oyster Bay.

PT Boat Tenders USS Willoughby AGP-9 and USS Wachapreague AGP-8 were also in the Leyte Gulf area.

I might be able to help you, but it won't be until my visit to NARA next month if I don't have the info already at home. I have seen multiple documents listing out the US fleet organization, but as they were each about 100 pages or more, I haven't scanned in more than a couple sheets. Those sheets were of some PT Rons, which I sent to Garth. I still have copies at home and will look when I get there, but they're not broken down by operation and I can't remember what month they were.

If they're not of help, I can pull some of the other ones the next time I'm at NARA, which will be the week of July 6th.

Thanks, Tracy!

I've confirmed, now, that MTB RONs 7, 12, 21, 33, and 36 were there for the attack in October 1944. I have found info for the patrol areas for their assigned Sections of 3 PT Boats each and which PT was in which Section. Now I am looking for where the three AGPs were located to support these Sections. I saw thumbnail of a map showing where Oyster Bay was located, but I've lost that web page, now.

I found this excerpt from "At Close Quarters"

"On September 12 (1944) Commander Bowling temporarily shifted his pennant to Oyster Bay and sailed with the Mobiack and Squadrons 9, 10, 18, and 33 for Morotai in the Halmaheras, arriving there September 16, the day after the initial amphibious landings. Oyster Bay with 10 boats of Squadron 33 returned to Mios Woendi on October 6, and a week later, with Commander Bowling again aboard, departed with two new seaplane-type tenders, Wachapreague and Willoughby, and 45 PT's of Squadrons 7, 12, 21, 33, and 36, for Leyte Gulf in the Philippines. They arrived there at dawn on October 21, a day after the major assault landings on the island of Leyte."

I found this excerpt from http://hazegray.org/danfs/auxil/agp9.htm

"The PT's arrived at Leyte Gulf on the morning of 20 October (the first day of the landings on the western beaches of Leyte proper) and commenced patrols that evening. Willoughby steamed to San Pedro Bay, off Leyte, arriving there at 1443 on 21 October, and tended the PT's of MTBRon 7 and MTBRon 21 over the ensuing weeks, weeks that did not lack for excitement!"

So, Oyster Bay didn't have Rons 7 or 21. Process of elimination continues.

OK, this is what I have scanned in. It's just part of the PT section ... obviously this was not the total list for PTs in the pacific at the time and I just scanned in this sheet to mark where/what/etc. I'll try and get the rest for you next month, but it wouldn't hurt for you to send me a reminder just before the 4th of July.

Thanks for the efforts, Tracy. I've seen that page show up in my Google search results. That particular page isn't what I'm looking for, but it helps with the "process of elimination".

I've heard that Al Ross might know some of the answers to my questions, too.

I think that I'm looking at the Oyster Bay tending to just MTB RON 33 in October '44. I have found reference to the USS Wachapreague tending to boats of both MTB RONs 12 and 36; leaving just RON 33.

Oh, did I share, with you folks on this thread, the rough layout for my 1/350 USS Oyster Bay diorama?

This is the latest water base that I'm going to go with:

I thought that you PT Boat Fans would enjoy this photo. Its not at NavSource.org, yet, but I have submitted it to Gary P.

I received it from the widow of an Oyster Bay crewman. It is definately after July '44 when the Oyster Bay's radar antenna was switched from a mast on the stack, to the foremast, in Brisbane. And I'm assuming that it is during the Leyte / Philippine Island campaigns and most probably in San Pedro Bay. I would also assume that those are MTB RON 33 boats; i.e. PTs 489, 490, 491, 492, 493 (lost on Oct 25, 144), 494, 495, and 497. Totalling 8 boats. I see 7 in this photo. In another, more popular photo, there are 7 boats on the port side and one on the starboard side. See the second photo, below.

Any comments or input about this is most welcome!

Here, there are about 13 boats along side the Oyster Bay. The NavSource.org caption states that this is PT-357 pulling up behind her. The 357 was in RON 27 which arrived in San Pedro Bay during or after December 1944.

I've just started to try my hand at modifying a WEM PT-109 kit into a 1/350 version of Ducati650's PT-495. I have scraped off the misc. molded-in deck features and cut off some bulwark and some features behind the aft .50 cal station.

I have scratch built a piece to replicate the different vent stack? that is located aft of the .50 cal station.

Is it too, big? Will it suffice? I'll probably have to make at least 8 of these for my diorama.

Here is a little more progress on my PT-495 in 1/350.

I've had to scavenge some parts from a JAG PT-200 class kit; i.e. the 40mm and the torpedoes (which aren't permanently attached yet).

I don't know, yet, what I'm going to do for some of the twin and single .30 cal and extra .50 cal guns on this boat. The 37mm with the WEM kit isn't exactly like the Ed's, either.

And that's the only "star" pedestal base that I have. I may have to remove it for consistancy's sake.

Nice ships! I like the roll-off racks for the torpedoes. Are they scratch-built?

Progress continues on my PT-495. I've used Model Master Enamel "Field Green" and Model Master Acrylic "Aircraft Carrier Type 2".

I've bashed some guns together from JAG PT-200 40mm, 20mm and 37mm and L'Arsenal 20mm's. The pedestals are just styrene rod and can be removed from the holes for safety, as wells adjusted up or down. I got lucky with the stars and bars decals. They are from GMM's 1/350 WW2 USN Aircraft Markings set.

The camo pattern isn't just like Ed's. I tried. And the decals are not set permanently, yet.

I wonder if these boats of RON 33 are nestled next to the Oyster Bay. This photo will be most valuable in the details for my diorama.

How am I doin'? Let me know. Yea, yea! The torpedos are coming!

You can't quite tell, but I've toned down the green and the blue decals with a dark pastel chalk weathering and applied a dull coat over all. I found some numerals small enough for the hull numbers.

As promised............TORPEDOES!

And a black wash and another dull coat.

And since this is a "Calling All.........Ship Fans" thread, I will continue my "Work In Progress" elsewhere. Possibly "Calling All Barnegat Class Seaplane Tenders" or "1/350 PT Boat Tender".

Thank you, Ed, for the beautiful model of the PT-495. It will be my reference for this boat and the next 6 or so that I have yet to go.

This is Revell's old kit, started maybe 20+ years ago and pretty much left in this state albeit unpainted since then. I decided to use WEM's USN WWII Tropical Green paint for something a little different; it was started into MTB Green when I started it back up a year ago. I just painted the Norfolk Anti-fouling today and thought I'd post the pics for those who've never seen the tropical green before.

This was the first stepped hull I'd ever had to mask before, which lent itself to some experimentation. If you look at photo two, I basically ran a long line of tape up to the break and when it wrapped over the edge it curved "out of the way." I then ran a second one at a harder angle in and immediately started curving it out so that when looked at from the front and side it appears straight and level. It's not perfect, as you can see in the second pic the two sides aren't even, but it's hard to tell when looking from the bow on, so I'll just make sure no one picks it up to look at the bottom ;)

Tape used was Tamiya 10mm wide cut into thinner strips; roughly 2-3 mm wide.
