Bad days for modeling sounds very familiar . When I reach the mental buffers I go and do something completely different helps clear the fog of frustration that descends on all that I try to do . In fact if I just press on then as you say, things go from bad to worse.

Re: 1/100 Arkmodel Udaloy
Thanks for the encouraging comments
Anyway, I tried for the first time to use an airbrush. I have only one color to test it with, but it worked pretty ok. I did part of a deck in Red (the part on which the crane is standing). For the rest I just did some stuff that couldn't really go wrong, like putting some PE doors in place (on the deck below the crane). Practically that part of the ship is nearly finished too, so at least I did make some progress today. Maybe I'll continue with the crane itself or with that small lifeboat which is standing in front of the crane.
The rudder is something totally different though, can't really fix it anymore I guess. Maybe I'll have to make an entirely new one. Luckily I have Dave's article about his rudders from the magazine, they' re (and have been) of great help!
I figured now that I hadn't posted any pictures of the real thing over here. So here are a few:

Awch, I can feel the horror up till here. And now that I come to think of it, I'm building mine on the attic, so I'll have to go down the cornered the stairs too...Santee is nearing the completion point. I now have to move it out of the shop. A friend of mine is going to assist me. We have to pick up the whole works, turn it almost 90 degress vertical, go down a short hallway, into a bathroom, in order to make a turn around a corner. If I can get past the corner, the rest is downhill. If I hit the bridge assy., I'm dead. I am not looking forward to this.

Hiya Neptune Been watching your post here and noticed something that might interest you or maybe piss you of.
In your last post with pictures you posted this image - Look behind the rudder to the end of the stern of the ship.

Around the stern I noticed that it looks like this ship has a tunnel similar to what I have seen in the Slava and Kirov Class.

Re: 1/100 Arkmodel Udaloy
Hello Michael,
I'm not surprised at all, I've seen it before. I won't be changing that hull though. These drop shaped things in front of the props are also not present. In plastic you can ask me whatever you want and I'll try it, but not with fibreglass... There are only few people who would notice it and most of them will be from this board. There are a lot of things which probably only I would notice too, so I for me it's not important enough to try and butcher this kit. I have come to the conclusion that this is a kit and one of my scratchbuilds (for which I can make special effort). If I'd throw away everything which is wrong with this kit, then I have to throw away most of it. Instead I chose to adapt as far as possible and see where I end up. If something is not possible or not acceptable, I'll scratchbuild it myself. As you've seen before in my adaptation of the lower deck. I could have thrown out the entire "long side plate" and made an entirely new one just for that one hole which they didn't get entirely right, but I opted not to and just fit in a plate. I'll see what comes out when I'm painting it, whether it is visible or not.
Thanks for notifying though, any help is always welcome!
Here is an example of an "unacceptable" one. Again the shapes are more or less correct, but this time the sizes are not. The jib is pretty accurate though, in reality it is also only the lower part of the jib which is flat, the sides are indeed higher than the middle part and hence bending the sides of this PE jib would make it fairly accurate. I can't see how to bend it though and I think I'll just use it as a template to make a more detailed styrene version. The lower part of the crane should in fact be of a much smaller diameter, one that matches the top part. I'll remake that too. The cabin itself might be useable although I'm not sure, possibly I'll also use it a template. This will take a lot more time of course. And with such a model I can't build when I'm onboard myself, so it'll be another three months before any real progress will be made.

And this is where we are now, only dry fitted though.

Some really interesting pictures especially of the underside . Question The anti foul on the Udaloy is it is red or black and what is the boot topping, white strip red then black . I have photos of the underside , props shafts etc for Kiev and it's all RED, not a trace of black. Was there no consistency as to the underside paint scheme. Roel good idea to take parts with you to work on , progress can still be maintained.

Re: 1/100 Arkmodel Udaloy
I think black is the undercoating, whereas the red is the actual cover coat. The deployment at sea must've worn away the red coat until the black is showing underneath.

Re: 1/100 Arkmodel Udaloy
There is indeed no consistency at all. On some Udaloys there is the black boot topping as on most of the other ships, on others it's just plain red with a white line on top. The one I'm building had an all red lower side and a white line on top at that time frame.
As for wearing out, I doubt that, the red paint is mainly anti-fouling, it's pretty hard to wear that out, in fact it doesn't really happen. On our ships it only goes away by being damaged on the bulb, but apart from that it stays mainly intact.
I think on Vinogradov the red was de coloured by a layer of algae which is normal on a hull. The red top was just above the water. They haven't been navigating that much in the 90's.

Re: 1/100 Arkmodel Udaloy
Danke shn Atom! I've been following these topics, but lost track of it somewhere in the middle. I found a couple of new pictures again, thanks.
As I said, that crane is getting better when it's scratchbuilt! I've also discovered the dimentions of that resin stuff is totally wrong. The cabin is more or less ok, but the cilinder below it seems to be 2m high if calculated. In pictures however you can see it's only about 1m or 1m20 high.
Here is how I made the jib, not perfect yet though. DIfficult to find pictures of that crane in deployed mode, so it's difficult to see the higher end of the jib with the wheels etc.

Luckily I have plenty pictures of the cabin, so here's my enhanced version, next to the resin model.

The starboard side is not yet fixed as I will probably put something inside the cabin and paint it. There are real windows now, so that's the least I can do.

Totally wrong backside of the crane. Probably due to lack of reference, take a side view and you'll get this result as in the resin thing. After some examination and understanding of what you're looking it you see there's a couple different winches on the back of the cabin. And on the starboard side is a cilinder which turns the crane on top of it's cilindrical support. It's not yet finished, and I'm affraid I won't finish it anymore before leaving (monday morning). I'm sorry Dave, this time I won't be taking any modelling parts with me. I won't have much time as we'll be in dry dock for some time, so I'll have other stuff to do.

And with the jib.

Hi Roel excellent piece of scratch building and I see what you mean with the cab , there is quite some difference. Well it looks like we will have to wait until you return home for more build pictures? Till then have a good trip.

He is still at sea sailing around the Med. He is due home now, but they keep finding another port to head to and you don't just clock out and go home at the end of your shift.

An expat friend here has been building the same kit & can relate to some of the pain you're experiencing. He's still working on it but here are a few photos to show you what Udaloy looks like on the water.
