Techniques for Scratchbuilding 1/700 Scale Hulls?

Post by Michael E. »

All:

Is there any place on the web that describes various techniques for scratchbuilding hulls in 1/700 scale?

I've looked at some of the threads on scratchbuilding on this website by Dino Carancini, Andrew Ayling, and others, and have been greatly inspired, but would like more information on the various techniques than is available here.

I'm talking about relatively basic hull shapes--and no plank on frame construction techniques please!

BTW, to Dino Carancini, have you written anywhere how you produced the hull for your HMS Exeter build? I saw the pictures of you working on the hull that accompanied the posting in the gallery, but would be grateful for more detail if that is available somewhere.

And to Andrew Ayling, I like the description of how you built the hull for your HMS Ajax in 1/350, but the links to the photos on the thread are broken. Would it be possible to repost them?

My apologies to you both for this imposition.

And many thanks to all in advance for any help you can provide.

Yours truly,

Mike E.

All:

A detailed review of the numerous scratchbuild postings on this website has provided me with all the insights and ideas on this topic that I need... at least for now.

Thanks for your time.

Yours truly,

Hi,

There was a site for non-military ship modeling called the Debris Field (now long gone)- in it there was an interesting way to scratchbuild 1/700 hulls with card and filler (The author's name was Otto H something.....). It looked rather simple, clever and effective. I thought I had saved a copy somewhere, but I cannot locate it right now. Perhaps someone else has saved it- I can try to search some more, though, if interested.......

One method (I think it's similar to the one Timothy is describing), you get the blueprints for the ship, layout the decks on separate sheets of foam board, cut to shape, glue them together, and then putty and sand like crazy. Pretty effective and relatively easy I think.
Drawing Board:
1/700 Whiff USS Leyte and escorts 1984
1/700 Whiff USN Modernized CAs 1984
1/700 Whiff ASW Showdown - FFs vs SSGN 1984

Slipway:
1/700 Whiff USN ASW Hunter Killer Group Dio 1984

Reigels,

Yes, that is the modeler (my apologies for getting the name wrong)!

Thanks

My Kungsholm building thread (de witte reus) viewtopic.php?f=13&t=35951 should give you a reasonable view of a 'bread and butter' technique in balsa and styrene. This technique works best if you have access to deck plans. It was based on a dutch language 'howto' by Maarten Schonfeld of IPMS-Netherlands. Only difference is that Maarten is using styrene glue and I'm using CA glue.
