Dear Boys & Girls, because this thread

viewtopic.php?f=51&t=39282

is purely devoted to the pre-war Japanese Merchant Marine and its subsequent wartime uses, here is a new thread for those interested in the post-war Japanese Merchant Marine. Let me start with three of my favourites from the mid 1960s; Nippon Yusen Kaisha's Yamashiro Maru class of high-speed motorships......

M.V. YAMANASHI MARU; a one-off high-speed motorship built for Nippon Yusen Kaisha which led to a class of three derivative sisterships - Yamashiro Maru, Yamaguchi Maru and Yamagata Maru.

Yamanashi Maru differed from her three Mitsubishi-Nagasaki-built sisterships by having a narrower hull, a vertical parallel-section funnel, only one open promenade deck and a slightly different design of goal-post masts. She laid out the basic design used in Nippon Yusen Kaisha's final generation of cargo motorships before containerisation and she introduced the bulbous bow and high-speed hull form to cargoship design. The Yamashiro Maru, Kaga Maru and Ise Maru classes all followed the design of the Yamanashi Maru.

Dear Boys & Girls, here are some of Osaka Shosen Kaisha's post-war motorships. They all seem to be variations on a standard design; the livery is very simple, black and white with buff goalpost masts and derricks. The white OSK funnel emblem is actually a structure which stands proud of the funnel itself.

Some more Osaka Shosen Kaisha motorships from the same period. In April 1964 Osaka Shosen Kaisha (or OSK) merged with Mitsui Senpaku Kaisha to form Mitsui-OSK Lines (known today as M.O.L.) and Osaka Shosen Kaisha's fleet transferred over to the new combined company.

This is Osaka Shosen Kaisha's first post-war post-war ocean going ship, the one-off steamship S.S. Osaka Maru. She doesn't bear any real relationship to the later motorships and she shows some features from the wartime standard designs.

Dear Boys & Girls, this is one of my favourite shipping lines; Mitsui Senpaku Kaisha. In 1951 a new and very attractive livery was introduced; the ships have an "apple" green hull with white titles, red boot-topping, the upperworks are white and the funnel is "slate" or dark-green-grey with three white stripes. As is often seen with some Japanese shipping lines liveries, the funnel emblem or device is not just painted onto the funnel, but is actually a structure which stands proud of the funnel's surface. Here is the stunning M.V. Mogamisan Maru of 1956......
