Hello all,

Here is my current little build: HMS Bonetta, a turbine powered/coal fired torpedo boat destroyer from 1909.
She and her sister ship HMS Albacore were 215ft 3in long / 440tons.
Designed as upgraded "30 knotters" they were buit by Palmer's without firm order from the Royal Navy.
Launched in 1906/1907 the ships were only completed and accepted by the RN in 1909 after the accidental losses of HMS Tiger (a 30-knotter) and Gala (from River Class).
They proved quite unsuccessful and were scrapped shortly after WW1(1919/1920), spending their careers in Home waters.
(Souces: "The First Destroyers" by David Lyon and French magazine "Marines & Forces Navales" n°91).

Can't wait to see it finished. I have the book "The First Destroyers" and love it. Those early ships look so neat. I was considering one as a possible future R/C build but that would be a few years away.

I am amazed at the skill of those who do 1/700 scratchbuilds as I have enough problems just building those when they are in kit form and the photoetch is just so small.

My favorite type of ship! And by the look of it, a sharp model in the making! :thumbs_up_1:

Its like a destroyer factory!!!

another worthy model subject! :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1:

A metal stem piece makes a lot of sense in these small scales!!

Thank you very much everybody, always encouraging (I owe a lot to modelers posting in this forum in terms of modeling tips and motivation).
That makes you feel like you may not be so crazy (or at least not the only one to be) spending hours on a 10cm piece of wood that will end gathering dust on the shelves till the cats eventually catch it

I'm digging holes in the deck for air vents and funnels because I find it too difficult to cut these at the correct angle and height.

Dude, inspiring! I'm working on a small japanese garage kit of the IJN Shinonome, which looks very similar, but no way I'll get your level of detail. And without PE, even!

Truly a brave man to enlist the help of model ship enemy #1.

For sure enemy#1, but quite a lazy one!

Update about railings.
These are made of electric wire of different thikness. It will never look perfect but it's strong (remember enemy#1 is around there...).

Hi,

Started the painting, looks like a scarab now!
Still have to paint boats and do the weathering.

Hi,
Love your helper and build. Very interesting to see the progress. One question, though. How did you construct the bridge?
Cheers,
John

Thank you Islander.
Well the bridge is simply made of 0.3mm plastic sheets. After pic "turtle deck in progress" I added a sheet to make the floor, the canvas was simulated with a plastic sheet where I sraped the areas between the (fictive) stanchions.
Here is a (too close) view, hope it helps.

Hi,
Here's an update on the scratchbuilt boats (plastic sheet, electric wire and CA glue)

I also began weathering the ship.
First overall paint layers were satin black and then flat black on the deck and forecastle floor.
After this thinned red brown (heavily thinned for the deck, a bit less on the sides).
I think I will add another lighter brown and some very light grey (but I'm posting this picture before I mess it all  )

Looking good. Can you describe your technique for the life boats? I have not been able to figure out how to scratchbuild convincing open life boats myself.
