Sure, this is museum quality stuff. Looks a lot like the models in our company offices and that means yard-built models!!! Very nice work on this bulk carrier, how did you actually come to the idea of building this ship? I also have several general arrangement plans, but without a lines plan I"m a little lost for building a larger scale model...

Re: 1/400 Bulk Carrier "Dimitris Manios"
Gentlemen i thank you all for your interest and kind comments.
Roel the idea of building this model came up very naturally. First of all i always admired those big shiny display models at shipping companies. Second merchant ships are very appealing to me both as vessels and modelling subjects. Moreover the m/v "Dimitris Manios" was under the management of the company i work for and i had been on board her several times. Dimitris Manios himself was a legendary greek shipowner who was the founder of the company from which the company i work for has evolved. All the above combined with a modeller's spirit a general arrangement plan and a good set of photos were more than enough to get me started. I wish i could build this model in larger scale but the lack of reference along with my lack of experience in scratch building made me choose the 1/400 scale.
If you have any more questions please feel free to ask.
A question for the moderators. Please advise where to post the photos of the finished model. Shall i post them in this thread in order to be complete or in the main picture gallery ?
Kind regards
Yannis

Thanks for the inspiration. This build has jump started my Suezmax: Angelica Schulte.

Scott you made quite a jumpstart with this tanker. Your work is very clean and well defined.
The Schulte Group site with it's terrific ga plans gave me also some ideas for a tanker but i had second thoughts due to the complexity of the deck piping and the lack of an effective way to replicate all those pipe curves and flanges. I can't wait to see your approach on this matter.
Regards
Yannis

Re: 1/400 Bulk Carrier "Dimitris Manios"
I suppose you are building in the 1:700 scale? Great work on those winches for sure, I never made anything close to that I guess. Great job and I'm already looking forward to a topic on this scratch build !!!
I guess were creating a merchant group now. Yannis do you plan any other ships (from your own company maybe?)
In 1/700 piping is still workable, you can see what I did on my Donau LPG carrier, a lot more complicated, but once you get started with it, you'll get a feeling on how to make these bends etc. It'll work out just fine! In 1:400 such project would become more difficult as the piping becomes bigger and it doesn't bend or turn so easily.

Re: 1/400 Bulk Carrier "Dimitris Manios"
Roel there are a lot of subjects i have in my mind right now. I have gathered some plans for passenger ferries and cruise ships but the one i would really like to build is the one that i can't find even a general arrangement plan (how typical). It's ex Bergesen's (now BW GAS) Berge Boston (your LNG Excel was quite an inspiration). Unfortunately due to the fact that it is an LNG ship means there is little or no chance to obtain any plans so i would have to settle with my also favourite Russian/Soviet navy. What about that ex-Hellespont ULCC you were building? Have you finished it? It was colossal even in 1/700 scale.
Yesterday i found in a misplaced file some photos from an earlier stage of the construction of "Dimitris Manios" . I apologize for going back and forth on this one but i thought you would find them interesting.
Kind regards
Yannis

Re: 1/400 Bulk Carrier "Dimitris Manios"
Great work Yannis, but I don't think you have posted a photo of the final product, with cranes in place yet.
I'd also wondering if anyone might have GA plans for the Stena V-Max tankers Stena Victory and Stena Vision
Did anyone download a copy of Hellespont_Fairfax-ga.pdf off of the owners website before she was sold? I think I missed this one before it was pull down http://www.hellespont.com/index.php?seite=ships&id=7Yannis Karystinos wrote:What about that ex-Hellespont ULCC you were building? Just saw the finished pics in the gallery email. Very nice work, and it's cool that we get to see it being built right here.

Timothy thanks for the kind comments.
It's always nice to see photos of a finished model but it's far more interesting if you can watch it's building process.
Best Regards

Thank you Capito Norbert. Congratulations for your Bismarck too. You have taken styrene scratchbuilding to another level.
If you mean this Esso Europa http://www.aukevisser.nl/german/id55.htm please tell the boss of your shipyard to allow you some spare time.

Norbert you may call it a mock up but with some paint and pe railings added it's a proper model by itself. I hope you will not abandon this project.
