Hi Guys,

Just obtained a copy through other means. I wonder if there is a way to have the book printed out of China or India which do not have or observe foreign copyright laws

The Burt books and others are just too good not for everyone who wants them to have them. The only comparable is a Roberts & Raven.

Food for thought

A copy of the 1919-1939 book just sold on eBay for the equivalent of US $485!

Yea, GBP 256.01 is a high price.
The seller must have more than one ID on ebay, I saw a guy ended a listing of the same book, using the same picture and item description.

I'm fascinated reading about the ebay market and wild bidding for these British Battleships books. I thank goodness I am old enough to have bought them at their first printings for around $35.00 at that time. Are there any other warships books you members may know of that are highly sought after and fetching such high prices?
While I am at it, I might recommend the recent and still in print book "The Kelly's British J,K & N Class Destroyers of W.W.II" by Christopher Langtree. If you like British destroyers you will not find a finer warship book than he has produced. Full technical history and operational history along with great photos. Do not miss getting a copy if you are a destroyer fan! :woo_hoo:

Hi Guys,

I was just about to post about the most recent sale on Ebay. I think the reason these books are going for so much is that they are indeed that good. In fact, I'd venture to say that if Ray Burt is still with us, I would plead with him to do a series on US battleships the same way he did the Royal Navy battleships. The Friedman, Dulin & Garzke, & Schimera books while quite excellent on the technical side, leave much to be desired as sources of references for modellers.

Also, given the whole new range of kits that have come out in the last few years and are announced to come out soon there is really no reference material that show good photographs of these ships available in one convenient location.

While I do love Navsource, its a pain in the neck researching the ships on the computer especially when govt sponsored archives show very few pictures in their valiant efforts to show as many ships as possible. And searching govt archives takes forever. Has anyone tried to get into the US National Archives on line? It's virtually impossible to find good pictures of let's say the USS New York, BB-34 yet easy to find tons on the USS Iowa, BB-61. I'll grant you there were prohibitions against taking pictures of USN ships after 1938 due to some law whose name escapes me at present but there are tons of officially sanctioned photos in the govt records. Some of them are breathtaking in detail like the Arizona's turrets being serviced.

Oh well, just throwing my oar into the water. If you have the funds and chance to either bid on ebay or find these books on line but already have them, please as a courtesy post them here. I can think of no better people who would value these books as much as we do.

I had no idea that books printed as late as the 80s could go for so much!! It just seems wrong, especially if the author has the publishing rights but has maybe passed away.

Call me an evil pirate (something cool, like Red Corsair Rob) but if I happened upon one of these books I'd slap it into a pdf file before you could say "copyright infringement".

Good idea! I have every expensive British warship book available but it would take too long to scan in so many pages!

I usually just email ppl what ships plans they need! Free of charge unfortunately!

Laurence

Fine thank you Alan!

Am I breaking copyright law by scanning in from these books and emailing people free of charge what they need?

I usually do this as most modellers cant afford to buy these books!

I dont have the entire book scanned in, I scan what people tend to ask for!

Hello Laurence,

The laws may be different in the UK, but here in the US, it's acceptable to email/fax/mail a copy of an illustration from a book or even an article from a journal to another person, especially for scholarly or research purposes. The line is drawn at copying and sharing an entire book, or a large portion thereof, or an entire journal.
On a few occasions, I've heard of librarians making a copy of an entire work for some purpose, but only after having determined that the work was out of print, was unavailable on the used market, and attempts were made to contact the author(s) to get permission.
I'm curious to hear about what the rules in the UK are as I've heard they do differ somewhat.

Best regards,
Ted

I recently read an interesting article about a new form of publishing, the brainchild of some successful businessman I think...on demand printing direct from the publisher through a web service. I would think that such a system would be perfect for special interest books such as the ones being discussed here. Not only does it allow more authors to see their works published, it would prevent short printing runs and associated "hyper-inflation" of second-hand book prices while providing the author with a relatively constant income from his/her work. This would surely be better than the current situation of books selling for hundreds of pounds.

I would think not since every library here in the United States has more than one copier for just this purpose. You are simply acting as a third party researcher. Besides, why then are used bookstores not illegal, aren't they reselling copyrighted material?

And speaking of which...ugh, I'm starting to rant.

No thats ok, copyright infiringement has gone so overboard in the last decade. Although, I understand some of the RIAA's position, their pursuit of infringement individuals has gone way overboard. There was a study done on Kazza users, it turns out the people with the largest "libraries" to download were the ones actually buying the music. In other words they were going after their only real customers.

Then there's software, If I can buy a used book why cant I buy used software (even though, I admit I am starting to see it).

I think it started with a basketball player who patented a specific move about a decade ago and started the "intellectual property" phenomena.

Aye, carumba.
