I had this idea floating around for awhile; what if they used the
Worcester Class for some of the CAG/CLG conversions back in the 1960s?
In my little alt universe the class doesn't come online until 1951-1953 time frame due to the need to work out more of the kinks in the 6"/47 DP main battery. In reality they were considered unreliable due to a number of design flaws/deficiencies. It was also planned to mount fully automatic triple DP turrets in later units of the class but they were canceled when the war ended. Taking that into consideration I whiffed up some triple auto DP turrets for them and ran them through a missile conversion in the 1968-1970 time frame.
Given the relatively compact superstructures needed for the 6 twin turrets of the original design I found ample space astern for 2 Mk-10 Terrier launchers and 4 SPG-55Bs. Forward an ASROC launcher with reload magazine (ala the
Farragut) and 2 Triple 6"/47 DP turrets. Given the obsolescence of the 3"/50s by the '70s I chose to remove all of them and added 4 Mk-42 5"/54 in their places to round out the gun armament fore and aft. Radars are '70s era SPS-29/48 combo for air search, SPS-10 for surface, and MK-68 GFCS for the 5" battery and an upgraded MK-34 for the 6" battery. I chose to replace the amidships MK-37 directors with additional MK-68s for better coverage/survivability. Directors above the bridge can only see but so far.
I added some flag spaces near the bridge (ala
Newport News) and enclosed the boats in deck houses with accordion doors to get them out of the way as well as to reclaim the deck space. CIWS and SRBOC can go up there as she gets modernized later on. The original seaplane hangar is now the helo hangar with an elevator and the landing area has additional parking space on deck.

What do you guys think? Any suggestions, thoughts, comments, questions, etal. welcome.
