Going back to theoretical mods, It would be interesting to try two superfiring twin 6" from Tiger blake etc on the stern, with as many twin 3" along each side either arranged similar to KGV or the standard American battleship arangement.
Then have single and quadruple 40mm where ever they will fit.
Does anyone know when bow thrusters started to come in?

There were plans in late 1943 for Warspite, Nelson and Rodney to have major refits to update their AA Fire Control, secondaries and light AA ready for the War in the Far East which was expected to go on into 1946/7.

Warspite and Nelson would have been refitted in the US.

Warspite would have had an additional 4 twin 4-inch added (making a total of 8 twins) plus improved fire control and extra pom-poms. (This in addition to repairing her glide-bomb damage.)

Nelson would have had US Fire Control and AA instead of British, but would not have been finished until September 1945.

These refits were designed by BAD(W).

Rodney's refit was less well developed, but it was intended to be done in the UK and the fire control and AA turrets from Ark Royal were to be used (Mark 37 directors with 4.5-inch cams and 4.5-inch BD twins).

Warspite and Nelson details seem to be lost, and Rodney was a more just a plan, but PRESUMABLY would have been based on the good points of whatever happened to Nelson ????????????????

Keith,

if the Polish link that you supplied was for my benefit, then I thank you very much.

I followed the link and was amazed at the craftsmanship that went in to building that particular model.

I have since been given another image and feel that it provides (probably) about the best camouflage information for HMS RODNEY.

I will attach it with this post and hopefully others may benefit.

I am building Nelson with the above paint scheme (1942). I'm wondering what the deck camouflage looked like so I can do that as well. Could somebody please point me in the right direction? I want to paint the deck before adding rails.

if you go to my post of 23rd January 2010 you will find a camouflage image. That image is an enhanced one of the one that you have just posted. :thumbs_up_1:

I don't think that you can go too far wrong by painting the deck in that colour scheme, although my previous post (to this) included an image of a variant. I am not sure of Nelson's pattern but I am sure that the colour scheme would be the same.

If I can get hold of a plan view of Nelson's upper deck (1942) I will post it, but meantime, I hope this is of help. :big_grin:

I have followed the camouflage disussion of the Rodney and Nelson with interest, noting the theft and non reference to my original work that first appeared in Man O War number Three, published in the late nineteen seventies. Since that time, no original material has been published. All of it being copied or direct reproduction as seen here.

Follwing ar's justifiable comment, I would ask the Moderators to remove both offending images from my posts.

What I posted was freely available on the world wide web, and gave no acknowledgement of source. I used these examples unwittingly. Had the original source been acknowledged throughout the world wide web, I would have referred to it.

I would thank Alan Raven for his diligent work, which has no doubt given guidance to model builders around the world.

However, the use of the word 'theft' in conjunction with my name is most unsettling.

I have consequently deleted both images from my PC.

Done. In the future, just click the "Edit" button and then click "Delete File" at the bottom of the page next to the file.

Although I get upset with my material being posted without permission, it is more the theft by eastern european publishers over the years that irks me. A practice which knows no bounds.
They appear to wait for material to be published in the west and then simply steal it. Where they do produce new material (on the RN especially) it is riddled with errors.
No doubt they are waiting for Friedman's cruiser book to see what can be taken from that.

Getting the Nelson pattern semi-correct is a must for me. I don't really want to take my kit any step further until the deck is painted. I will attempt to post some images of my build thus far later tonight.

Do you know of Camouflage tests on HMS Berwick at Scapa Flow (if not I found a file at NMM that might interest you).

Thank you for the offer, and I already have the file in question.
Photos taken of the ship taken right after refit show the use of two light greys similar to that worn by Kenya. Those of a slightly later date show the darker tone of what is called Berwick Blue.

Am not familar with Ballantyne, so may be in error in.what I wrote. I was referring to the visual side of things. Question; does this book show new material in respect of configeration and fit?

Nelson as it stands. Both port and starboard are painted. Deck is waiting till I find a correct scheme.

I was able to scan over Iain Ballyntyne's new Rodney book and it appears to be a more in depth text on Rodney than has been previously published. It also has a few new images that I haven't seen before, but there are only about 50 or 60 images in the whole book.

In regards to Nelson, I know it had was planned to put a floatplane on it, but I think only Rodney was ever equipped with one, am I correct? If I am not, what kind of floatplane was used? I know Rodney started with a Swordfish but was later given a Walrus.

Keith,

you are correct. Only Rodney, to my knowledge, was fitted with an aircraft and catapult, and Nelson wasn't. However, Nelson also had a crane that was capable of lifting a returning floatplane inboard. The positioning of the crane was slightly different in both vessels, Rodney's was tucked more 'inboard' (towards the bridge superstructure) than Nelson's, which appears to be located slightly outboard. Both were on the port side of the ship. :thumbs_up_1:

By the way, do you have an ISBN number for Ballantyne's book on HMS RODNEY? I sail my HMS RODNEY almost every weekend on Canoe Lake at Southsea and am asked many searching questions about her.
Here she is in company with HMS HOWE.
