Black for rope fittings is more practical. They have a lot of closed chocks, very bad for ropes. In those cases they often put grease on the ropes to reduce the damage done by chafing in the chocks. The grease makes a very dirty appearance on deck and fittings when you get them back inside, that's where the black paint comes in handy. It gives a neat look and the grease doesn't show so much (nor does the corrosion on these fittings). In addition of course they stand out much better and the likeliness of somebody tripping over them or walking into them is much smaller (really, that happens )

The model is just a model. The colour scheme is probably not accurate. Green however was used on Russian/Soviet ships as it's the second type of primer. Normally you put one coat of primer, red or green, after that another coat of primer, in the other colour of the first coat, so that you can see which patch has had one or two coats, then you start with intermediate or finishing coats. Soviets only used primer on the main decks, that's why they have either green or red decks. More recently they started using anti-skid paints, in comes the darker brown main deck.

Perhaps I'm a skeptic to your perspective on the threat of the work, Bob - the work doesn't strike me as too risky in truth - all you'd need to do is cut from the bottom with a knife to remove the section - do it by hand with an exacto and you shouldn't have a problem - it's two straight cuts with a 45 degree mitred corner. Even easier, is you have a straight-edge for one of those cuts - the platform runs flush to the bulkhead below it, and cut the structure side as an extension of the existing platform line - you could even shave it off or sand it to fit. The most difficult part would be that mitred corner, which isn't that hard either. From there it's three lengths of sheet to form the new barrier walls, and she's gravy in the dish.

Just my two pennies there, do with those what you will.

Wow, Bob, you are observing some pretty close attention to detail, and your fabrication abilities are pretty impressive. I really look forward to seeing these pieces assembled and painted. What a treat this will be!

That box on the platform is the same as on Udaloy, it's a very short wave radar that assists the helicopters during landing in bad weather. Don't know exactly how it works, but it kinda guides the helicopter (with or without the help of the guy in the flight control I don't really know).
Crisp work as usual! I agree with the solution for these platform supports, it would get a little too crowded if you tried to achieve the correct number, you can't really simulate the thickness of these supports after all, so it wouldn't look right anyway. Better to do it your way, reduce the number and have the shape right.

FWIW, my Velikiy just got re-started, but its in the paint-shop, coz i buggered the waterline last year & never had the heart to try & fix it: That situation changed a few hours ago......Miles of blue masking tape & a "nothin to loose" attitude later, and....well, we`ll see...

OK, I`ll try & post some pix of P.V. They ain`t too pretty, but....... Well, You asked! ETA: Summer 2099. but Bhe quality shoud be stunning, digital photography in 2099 is amazing. 129megapixel.

I think i prefer a sealed-up helo area: it makes the ship look cleaner. thats what i`m aiming at. Mainly coz i botched the kit parts but also because I`m putting a helo on the deck, so a flush landing area makes a bit more sense!

Painting commences tomorrow/today/ Monday 17th. I mixed my own hull colour, & the masking finished at "19:30", just as `er indoors wandered thru the front door. It was a bit like `Rain stopped play`, but wetter!!!!

Are You going to add turned brass barrels? Kirov, of all the class ships, would be improved by em.

Also, anchor chain. Are you going PE or real chain?

edit: Are the little 1/350 union bosses giving you trouble yet? The loss of their workers might make them mad. Just remember, 1/350 or not, no one screws with the Union.
