Bob- I just started my own 1/350 Kirov build, and will use this thread as reference, though I'm under no illusions of doing the kind of job you are. I noticed you sanded the helo deck rings smooth inside the landing zone. I did the same thing, after realizing that the decal simply wouldn't seat properly with raised lines underneath. I plan to paint the straight lines outside the zone white, and use the ring part of the decal. I also noticed the mid decks of one of your ship photos showed gray hatches instead of orange painted ones (just forward of the missile hatches), and was wondering if you planned on adding that detail to your model. I will try something to that effect, I think it would help break up the monotony of all that orange!

BTW, what does the folding king post do, and where is it located?

Thanks Bob, I appreciate the advice. Another thing I am doing is painting both pieces of the submerged bow sonar dome black and the rest of the hull bottom the usual red. I've seen some other ships done this way and really liked the effect. It highlights the dome and is easy to do due to the good fit of the pieces involved (with a little encouragement from me).

I'll need to get a decent camera to post any pics, my phone cam is quite fuzzy. I have a few pics of the late stages of my Sovremenny build taken by a friend of mine, and I tried to post them here, but it told me the files were too large, so I'll have to take care of that somehow.

Back to sanding and priming for me, look forward to your next Kirov update!

Hello Bob!
Your attention to detail is inspiring. Those photos of the Kirov you come up with are amazing. Are you going to detail the missile hatches forward of the superstructure? I decided to paint the raised rectangular area of hatches in it's entirety in ship's grey, and to detail the other hatches forward of that individually in grey. I was very pleased with the effect. I also decided to paint the bow sensor pod solid red, after trying several combinations of red/black/grey, and deciding that the lines of the ship were better served with no interference on my part!

Please excuse my fuzzy pics, I am still struggling with the process, just wanted to convey some overall impressions!

Hi Bob- I think you're referring to the large domes either side and slightly lower than the bridge? I noticed a photo in an archive somewhere on line that showed virtually the same sized domes placed in that location, and then noticed them in the kit, so on they went. They weren't in the instructions, but other parts on the sprues were not either, so I think that they were for some other kit for the same class. I'm sure anyone can tell I like the look of the white sensor pods placed all around the structures, I am known to go overboard from time to time.

I noticed the more foreward missile hatches that were painted grey in one of the photos in this thread, and thought it would help to add a sense of detail to the orange decking. With the superstructure set towards the rear a bit, the orange really dominates the forward part of the ship, so I thought I would break it up a bit. I'm not trying to capture Kirov at any particular point in her career, just trying to represent the class in general and allow myself a little creative expression. You didn't miss anything, your dicipline for accuracy is spot on! I've been giving some thought about being more technicaly accurate at some point in the future, especially with all the references available on line these days. Time will tell, I suppose!

Bob, a quick question about references.

On your trawling thru all the many & varied sources for references, Which ship of the class had most photographs?

I would guess Velikiy, but knowing my luck....
