Dave,

I truly appreciate your attention to detail, your superb craftsmanship, and the effort you have made to give us your tutorial on how to scratchbuild a model ship. I have learned quite a few useful tips which will come in handy when I get into the thick of my build. Thanks!

By the way, did you look closely at the images on the site dexter_klm referenced? There is an answer to one of your earlier questions there. A photo shows the large crane hoisting a Bazalt/Sandbox, apparently in preparation for loading a launcher (or removing it from the launcher). Some good pictures of the rigging on the crane there. That would make a nice diorama on your model.

Thank you DrPR I am grateful for the information and your kind comments. I've yet to rig the cranes that will be one of the final jobs and I agree having the cranes lifting one of the Bazalt missiles onto the cradle would make an interesting mini diorama.

Are you a member of a ship modeling club?

I jsut recognized that your kiev is 1/144th cale - not 1/72nd! Take this as a compliment!

I have some books of Brian King - a great ship modeler. I also saw a few pictures of a HMS Vanguard of Alex McFayden (correct spelling?!). A naval nation has also great ship modelers.

Hi Bernd Thank you . Yes I belong to the Ship Modelling Society as does a number of modellers on this board .This is a society dedicated to model shipbuilding in all its forms including maritime art. Brian King is an outstanding model maker and an established friend, I have known him for many years . There are many good model ship builders in the UK as in Germany and it is always a privilage to get together and discuss our chosen subject . The attention to the fine detail often makes the model your Bismarck is a good example of this .

your Kiev is also outstanding. I somehow prefer Cold War Sovjet ships over Nato ships - they just look better...

I was in 1997 at the Telford IPMS show... I enjoyed it and I need to attend it again ...

At last I can report that Kiev is almost one ship and not thousands of parts dispersed in small containers all around the workshop . The joy of just getting the superstructure married to the rest of the hull is for me a defining moment in this rather lengthy and at times frustrating construction project. This is the result so far. I must be honest with myself , there remains plenty of work in adding the small details which I have yet to get started on. Thank you all for your support I doubt I could have reached this stage without your genuine encouragement and help .
So here is Kiev for the first time as one.

Hi Norbert good to hear from you .There is still much to do especially all the minor detailing , hose storage racks , flag lockers ,ready use lockers, , boxes of all sizes , RAS lifts , flight deck crew { 50 or so} , hose for aircraft refueling , aircraft missile deck transport carts , fire fighting rising main points , the list goes on but it's these parts that will , I hope make the model.

Yes Dave when i look my model and the long road ahead to complete or near complete i can understand you clearly.
as you said one time: make your own time to do the things.
that's the philosophy i am following.
your model is superb in all aspects. in this stage is a great pleasure attaching each one piece you do one day, another day etc..
i pretend start my hull soon cause i finally purchase the wood for planking. is ceddar from 2mm - vey good wood.
so about the Kiev is a pleasure to see it in your best form.
i can say you the Kiev is a wonderfull model from you and is a great pleasure to be your friend. all the best!

Hi Chris it�s been my endeavor through out this build {and it has been a long one} to try and do the ship justice in model form and of course fulfill a long standing ambition. Your build is on an all together different level not just in the exceptional way you have gone about the construction but your incorporation of so many complex working features which in any ones language is an outstanding achievement .To put is bluntly I would not know were to begin on your Nimitz build .

Hi Doog I have been aiming to get the hull wet this year but its dawned on me that there is only 12 months in the year and I know I'm fast running out of months to achieve that aim. But I hope to have the model completed for Harrogate ME show in May.
